Tech Help on Project Bike?

3 posts in this topic

Got an interesting project. I found a hidden treasure. Its an 83 XL600R with only 1,900 original miles on it. Stored in a garage for many years. After a complete carb(s) cleaning, tank flush, new battery and tune-up it starts right up. However at constant throttle settings the motor tends to surge and if i idle it down to low at motor will quit without warning. Anyone out there have any suggestions as to what to look for next? Or any knowledge of "quirks" of this particular model? THANKS!

1-adjust valves

2-re clean carbs {dual carbs suck!}

3-check all electrical components

4 check for ail leaks.

Start the bike and get it warm. Do what ever you need to to get it to idle in some form. Spray carb cleaner on the ends of the rubber carb to engine boots. When the carb cleaner hits a leak the idle will change. Surging is a typical symptom of an air leak.

Make sure you can spray carb cleaner through all the passages in the carb.
