Did anybody hate their xrr when new?

I bought my 03 xr650r a month or so ago and I can not get used to it. Will this pass or should I get a new bike? The bike has great mods and is in mint condition it is just too heavy for me, I came from a cr250 and this thing feels like a truck. What do I do?

Craig, the CRF450X is 27 pounds lighter than the BRP.

If your not riding on the road, going from a cr250 to a CRF450/r/x would be a natural progression. Off road, tight stuff you would probably be more happy with a 450, but from a realiablility stand point, the 650R is tough to beat, and does well in most conditions, despite being built for "baja or desert" racing. :worthy::D

Craig yes i had issues with mine it took a long time to work it out,but now that i have i would not trade it for anything.Stay with it get a suspension revalve and hop it up a bit and just ride.I don't think there is anything better for (dirt)backroads here in OZ and man there are heaps of 4wd tracks and forestry's that i get loose on the big red thing.At 100 MPH on a dirt road my big ass Honda is awesome,remember this thing will travel all day at 90MPH or so other bikes may top out a bit quicker but they won't do it all day my man..

I have a few Honda's but when i just want to ride anywhere my plated pig is the go i often pick it over my crf450(crf490 now) even when i trail ride in the tight stuff i have an MX track in my front yard sometimes i go for a bash on the pig on this track.

I was at the stage of nearly giving up and buyin an x but in the long term i think the BRP is a better sickle.

I get big respect at some of the events here on the east coast getting loose on the big XR in a chicken suit.

There are places where the big girl shows her weight but believe it or not ya still give FA away to the Orange and blue bikes,but on open loose surfaces at stoopid speeds big red is king.

raise the forks up into the trees a 1/2" or so. Itll turn a lttle better.

Bg bikes arent for everyone. I suspect the guys who buy 1 then say

its a fat piece of shyte and sell it just dnt know how to ride it.

Smaller bikes can be forced to do what yu want whereas the beasts

have to be finessed. Big bikes are for thinking riders. You gotta plan

exactly what you wanna do a little early and you cant let fear rear her

ugly head. Once you learn how to ride the big monsters, the 450's

feel like playbikes. Make friends with your 650 and you'll fall in love

with her.

p.s. dont lsten to the crf450 guys:foul: , theyre hated of the 650 stems

from theyre fear of it.

For most, the suspension sucks on a stock XR650R (for those that can really ride). Having the right bars and putting then in the right place helps big time. The right tires for what you are riding in is also a must.

The bike is pretty much set up for me, My friend that I bought it from had the suspension set up for his weight and riding ability, which is about the same as mine. I am used to a light weight high reving 2 stroke.

I rode a friend's nicely fettled XR650R. I loved it. I went out and bought one that week. I supermotoed it, and I love it even more. :worthy:

I'll tell you right now, you just need to get used to it. I've had people give me all this bull about how an 650L "isn't a real dirtbike" blah blah blah...well, on my last desert trip, I was able to get it FULLY crossed up into a slide, do several INSANE hill climbs, and I even caught some decent air with it.

Once you get used to having the fat bitch between your legs...you REALLY start liking fat chicks :worthy: Trust me. Get used to it, push it, if you can get it near it's limits, and you still hate it, sell it to me. I wouldn't mind having a lighter, more powerful version of my L anyway.

Do you still have the stock tripple clamps? Cause putting applied clamps on mine made a world of difference for me. I moves you way forward and makes it easier for you to ride the 650r.

is this your first fourstroke... seems like it isn't the 650's fault but a combination of you learning how to ride a different kind of motor with some added weight...

i was really worried about the weight when i bought mine but whenever i am on the trails, street or where ever else i never notice it. only time i really notice is when i gotta put the damn thing on my stand for a tire change or something.

KTM 300 EXC (EXC-W) 2-stoke is very popular for woods/tight stuff. Good luck getting a 2-stroke plated though. XR650R is fire road/desert king. Your perfect bike depends on what terrain you ride. I think it takes a few rides getting used to the top-heaviness and unwillingness to turn of a 4-stroke like the XR650r or 450X from a 2-stroke MX.

Also, you probably miss the top-end hit when riding the xr650r. If you get the X, you still need a bunch of mods like a cam and uncorking to get some of that top end hit back. That's not the point of enduro's. They just chug for smooth controllable power delivery....including the KTM 300. One of my buds is getting a Hucky 510 enduro. They are a little closer to MX style power.

Good luck on your search. Just keep in mind that enduros are generally stable and controllable torque monsters that provide a comfy ride where MX is explosive power with a stiff suspension and nimble/light handling.

I have DH1 clamps, it has almost every modification I can think of, I think I will trade it in on a crf450.

For the most fun on an XRR, you really need a license plate.

Mine is a non-stop giggle machine on the street. Every stop sign is an opportunity to power wheelie through the gears. Every time traffic stops is a chance to thread the needle.

It is very possible to surprise sport bike on tight twisties.

An absolute blast on the street.
