Are these guys all on the BRP?:mad:

no...1x is riding a 450x...i'm sure some others are too...

also some husky's in that list...

and a BMW...

and at least one XR250...

what's the point of the post???

no...1x is riding a 450x...

Seems Honda is making a rather large bet on the 450x. No surprise there, I suppose. But if there are any 450 reliability issues that come out, there will be a lot of "Oh, crap!" and "I told you so!" and shoulda's, woulda's and coulda's.

I mean I can see why Honda is doing it. They want to prove the 450 can run with the big dogs--can BEAT the big dogs. On the other hand it'd be like going out into the garage and picking up a 1/4"-drive socket to take off your truck's lug nuts. Yeah, in theory you can do it, but you risk breaking the socket, which is a silly risk to take when you also happen to have a 1/2"-drive socket in your tool box.

Yeah-yeah-yeah, I know: sooner or later "the 650R is getting pulled". But as long as its in the freaking catalog you'd think they'd use it.

Okay, I'll stop my whining now. Maybe.

There was a time when a lot of the Baja racers would hang out here and talk about the XR650R and the race but, they got tired of the crap and moved on. Now it is mainly a "L" group and "what is the best duel sport tire" talk group.

Yes, that seems to be the case recently...The forum should be split...

Yes,Honda is gambling on the 450x in this 1000. FYI both Honda A-B will be riding 450x's....

The 450's they are riding are ultra reliable...

Hopefully, our 307X 650R will be the first (Honda) (650r) (Motorcycle) to La Paz.

Good luck to everyone racing..It should be very interesting.

Ron

Ron

Dumb question: where do you find who's riding what?

So much for Hengeveld's past statements that he wouldn't ride the 450 with the 650 still around.

I'll laugh my #$% off if a privateer outfit beats the 450's with their "outdated" 650R.

Honda seems to have gotten a little too confident in Baja, IMO. When Kawasaki was whoopin' their behinds with the KX500, Honda kept trying to make the XR600 into the KX killer it couldn't be. Honda finally built the bike that could take the KX down, but we never got to see the head to head as Kawasaki pulled out due to Danny Hamel's tragic death. KTM has tried to knock the 650 down, first with the 525's (ha ha) and then some one off LC -4 rally raid specials (close, but no cigar). So now Honda thinks that they can still dominate the only off-road series (SCORE/BITD) that they have success in with a 450 that is in reality nothing special compared to any other manufacturers 450? Why bring a knife to a fight with a bunch of other guys with knives when you've got the BFG from the game DOOM in your box van? And you have unlimited ammo?!!! I can see some KTM guys in Ohio laughing right now, just salivating to get a good team on a kitted 540XC.

That bike will eat a 450x for lunch.

I have been a Campbell/Hengveld fan for a long time (and before that Danny Hamel was my childhood hero), but I've come to the point that I want to see someone knock those idiots in the offices in Torrance, CA down a little bit. If the privateer teams in Baja all had to ride 450x's, I can guarantee that they sure wouldn't have the finishing rate that they do on the 650R.

Anybody know how to get in touch with a 650R privateer team that's got a chance next week? Would that be Ron Wilson's 307x? Somebody direct me here.

I'm sending them a check. Yeah, probably too late to help this year but I got to make a statement.

Anybody read about trophy trucks downsizing their performance capability in Baja!? Hardly.

I'm with you eastreich, Honda 's made the wrong decision, even it it was for the right reason... Honda really has gotten too big for their britches.

Weird science, Honda! Weird science.

Campbell is running their off road game now, right? He seems like a class act. Maybe Torrance has pulled his chain on this, don't know. Heck of it is, if another manufacturer's bike whups them, Campbell will take the hit, even if it was Torrence's decision.

I would pay big money to see a 650R beat Team A or B.

We had this same discussion before the San Felipe 250 and the Baja 500 about the 450X. I thought the 1X bike for the 1000 would be a 650R this year for sure. The 450X has proved capable and reliable yet there is so much negative propaganda about reliability. Perhaps a win on the little 450 will lay some of the BS to rest. BIG RISK. The teams look like the who's who of Baja racing so if Honda gets dethroned it won't be from lack of VERY FAST and experienced riders. The 450X can go WFO 1000 miles I'm confident of that. Seems Honda has lots of confidence in the 450X and they should.

No question.

I am not knocking the 450x, very competent bike.

I'm just shaking my head, amazed at Honda 's decision. Yeah, if they win on a 450x, they make a clear statement about the bike's abilities and put to rest some reliability issues [correct that: "doubts"].

If they lose, on the other hand...

I agree that the 450x can go race speed for 1000 miles. It has been done before. But you won't do it twice. Race a 450 in Baja, and you throw it away when you are done. You can ride the same 650 over and over. That is the reliability that we have all come to expect. You will NEVER get that with 450x.

When Honda cans the 650R, I may have to go with a KTM 525XC just out of spite. Unless someone comes up with a reliable kit to bore and stroke a 450x to a 550 or so to match the 540 kit for the KTM. I have been a loyal Honda rider for some time, as they make the bike that I want. That is the 650R. It is the best for me for desert racing (Hare and Hounds) and trail riding, and it can hold its own on the motocross track when it has to. At my size, a 450x is like riding a CR80. It is fun for a little while, but I'll break it sooner or later (usually sooner). I have a group of guys that I race with who are planning to race the 1000 in 2009. I think that we are going to pitch in together and buy a 650R next summer, especially if the 650R is about to get discontinued. We'll leave it in the crate until it is time to head south. I'm also willing to bet that we aren't the only ones with the idea of "hoarding" a 650R or two (When Kawasaki disco'ed the KX500 without a replacement in sight, many Team Green riders, including Destry Abbott, bought a few "spares" to get them by for awhile).

wonder if anybody will ask them why the sudden switch... as of two months ago he was saying the 650r was definately the bike for the job and now he just switched it up. corporate america has now got there grubby hands a little bit deeper into the baja

Internal..check your pm's....What a generous offer...anyone else wanna help put a Pig on the top step???

Ron

PayPal done.

Okay guys, Ron's our guy. For those of you who don't know, he and his team (Steve Garnett, Tim Morton and Scott Myers) finished 3rd in the 500. Only bikes that beat them were Honda 's A & B team.

Yeah, there's lots of guys campaigning on The Mighty Pig in this 1000, but not Honda America.

So I say we get behind number 307x.   Ron, you got my vote.

is there a good place on the web to get race updates as it is happening?

is there a good place on the web to get race updates as it is happening?

I got this from Ron:

"Race-dezert.com does live updates during the race..."

My estimation of things...

Johnny C. didn't have anything to do with not racing a 650R. I'm betting it was a Japan decision, not corporate America.

I bet they were 100% ready to prep an R and an X up 'till the last minute.

I can totally see why they'd do it (race the X) seeing that they do not have stiff competition from another brand. They have super reliable and super fast X's and they know they can still go 1-2 OA.

They have the right to be confident, they're good at this, and Baja racing is super important to Japan.

They'll put to rest the reliability issues talk (or at least make the talk really interesting).

And what IF at the last minute (meaning a month ago) there ended up being a team entered that could give 'em a run for 1st? Precision Concepts could build a 650R OA bike in 2 days for the 1x Henge/Cody/Childress team.

Then they'd leave the 6x Bell/Norman/JC team on an X.

They'd easily have any other brand with any riders covered that way.

The forecast I see is 6x taking the OA with 1x a close 2nd, both 450x's.

I'll be eating my words of a few months ago when I said "a 650r will win it OA".

Of our 4-rider team on the 650R #307x we have 3 guys who've Finished 2nd OA in SCORE Baja events and 1 guy who's got a 3rd OA to his name.

We're older and slower and not as preparred as the Team Honda guys.... but we're on a bike we believe in and we like.

I'm not being negitive, just realistic, as this will be my 20th Baja 1000 and know how things go down there.

Let's hope for a clean trouble free ride!

Tim

Hats off to you again InternalCombustion. A man who puts his money where his mouth is. Wish I lived closer. I'd drive a few hours just to have a cup of coffee & check out that wiring job. BTW when is the Baja 1000?

Race updates - Dirtnews.com might also be doing some race day updates and aparently the Weatherman will be live via the net (don't know where just yet). He's basically the eyes and ears of the race who relays info. They don't do much in the way of status reports, and don't cover bikes much, but ya never know.

Keep your eyes peeled in the International forum because we're attempting to have "cosmo" in the loop of text messaging of race info on race day. Cosmo will be up here in the States and will try to post info as he gets it.

And.... in the Interantional section TT'er "coffee" started a thread called "easy Baja 1000 questions" that he will update with info about the race people send to him, such as the race date and TT'ers who are racing.
