xr600 oil coolers options?

30 posts in this topic

Hi guys.

I'm upgrading my XR600 with a NX650 cylinder and a 10.25:1 compression WISECO piston. I'm also replacing the stock carburetor with the NX650 one to have smother throttle response.

So i want to add an oil cooler to help maintain temps were they should be.

I've seen those coolers on ebay, do you think they could work on the XR?

The coolers measure around 7.5in x 3.15in.

What do you think?

I've also found some stock XR250 oil coolers (those round ones that go under the headlamp.)

Do you think that those would be better?

Thanks guys.

Thanks LandsharkGT.

I've been looking for used XR400 oil coolers on Ebay, but i didn't find anything. But i did find some XR250 ones.

Do you know if they're the same?

How much can a new XR400 oil cooler cost?

Can i buy it online somewhere?

If so i think i'll buy it.

Mikyrc,

That is the same cooler as the Xr400. The fittings are different on the Xr250 oil cooler compared to the one on the 400. I have the one from a 250. I am going to change the way the oil lines attach to it and mount it on my Xr650r. I wish you good hands on getting it mounted. Keep me informed I may copy you. Thanks, Tony

Cool, that's good news

I'll go ahead and buy one of those from a XR250.

I can find the correct fittings here for the stock cooler so i'll not modify it probably. Just a pair of braided steel lines and something to attach the cooler to the bike and GO!

Thanks to everybody.

I'll post pics too as soon as i can get one of those coolers installed.

How is going your cooler installation?

I ordered an used one from ebay, hope i'll get it next week.

I also just finished the big bore swap on my XR. Now i'm still on the breackin period, so i can't force it very much.

I've gained some horses but nothing spectacular i think.

I also wanted to put a XR650L carb but i couldn't install it. i'll have to buy the rubber adaptor that goes from the carb to the cylinder and maybe the one that goes from the airbox to the carb. As it doesn't fit on the stock XR600 ones.

Please Thouk and XR500_89 keep us posted about the cooler mods.

Hi guys, i received the cooler but it seems that is a bit smaller than the XR400 one (25% less height). But is better that than nothing.

AS soon as i can have a pair of nuts welded to the frame i'll proceed with the installation. I'll probably use cooper tube and have the fittings be welded on it. I've looked for rubber or steel braided lines but they're too thick (the outside diameter is too big).

Hope i can finish it soon.

Hey Y'all,

After looking at the cooler that I have, from an xr250r, versus the cooler from the xr400r I have determined that they are different. But I guess y'all already know that. I received in the mail today the banjo fittings for my cooler. I picked up some tubing for the connection. I just need to go pick up some thin sheet stainless steel for the mount for the cooler. After that I will mount it up and run the lines. I think I will have mine done next week. Have fun, Tony
