320 grit or 240 grit hone?

Which would be better: A 320 grit flexhone or a 240 grit flexhone? I'm wanting to buy the 320 grit because I think it would do the job without removing any more of the plating than is necessary. But I have no experience in honing a plated cylinder and would like for someone to inform me. Also what diameter works best: 3 1/4" or 3 1/2"?

My trusty Eric Gorr books say use the 240 grit. You only hone cylinder for about 8 seconds wet with some oil. Don`t worry you will not damage the liner as it is extremly durable.:mad:

A 3.00" flexhone @ 320 grit is the proper version to deglaze a stock sized bore for new rings.

If I understood what I read, then platea honing is when you would hone in layers. For example, hone a cylinder with a 180 grit. Next hone over that with a 240 grit. Then use a 320 grit. If this is the proper definition, then I don't see where it would be practical. :mad: Because you rough the cylinder up, and then work to smoothen it back up. Maybe I misunderstand or maybe it just isn't sinking into my brain. Can someone clarify this type of honing process? I did a search, but nothing real informative came up.

Agree. I used one I bought oiff ebay and it worked great - quickly!

Don't worry the hone that you purchased will work just fine. I used the same flex hone for my rebuild and it worked well.

Cool! Thanks!.... Anyone know about the rings? I'm just curious now. My repair manuel doesn't mention what they are made of. At least I couldn't find it if it does.
