New Ride - 2006 XR650R

Well I just bought a brand new XR650R. Can't wait to get it home and uncork this bastard. Funny thing is I basically bought it over the internet from the dealer back home.

Can someone confirm for me that these bikes come with an 80 watt charging system on it already?

Are there any other decent dual sport kit.....other then Baja Designs?

yeah, 75-80 watts.

Trust me, if you have the skills to uncork it, you have the skills to rewind the stator. There are TONS of details and several guys on TT that will help you through it. Costs maybe $35 and takes probably 2-3 hours, max, first-time (if you're anal, like me). :cry:

I've done two 650R stators now and once I rolled up my sleeves and stopped wringing my hands, it was very straight-forward.

Re DS kits, I went with E-Line for my 650R. I liked the UFO/Oregon headlight assembly they used (with integrated turn signals, front and rear). But, I would NOT, repeat NOT, use them again. Crappo, failure-prone electrics, fittings and the turnsignal bulbs are barely viewable in bright sunlight. That "sleek-whiz-bang" headlight is mounted in a plastic lens and uses a non-standard incandescent bulb. I changed almost all that crap out this summer--at great expense and trouble--for BD kit.

I DS'd my wife's CRF230 two months ago and went with Baja Designs. They may not be "sleek" but the quality is 1st-rate. And the turnsignal bulbs are bright. AND the BD headlight assembly uses a glass lens and H4 bulb so once you rewind your stator :devil: you can pop in a nice 80w/80w H4 (or even 100w/100w) and you got yourself a manly-man's setup. What ever DS setup you choose, make dang sure it has a glass lens and uses an H3 or H4 (either one is good) bulb. My two cents.

Glad to hear that info about the BD dual sport kit...you must have read my mind because I was looking for a more "sleek" design. But so far my research has concluded that the BD kit is one of the best as far as reliability - and thats number one for me. My old ride was a 2000 DRZ400S, real good trail bike .... suffered a bit on the highway with two people though . The only thing that has me edgy about the XR is the kick start only. I was a bit spoiled with the E start DRZ.

As nice as E start is, once you get it jetted correctly it fires pretty easily. Probably where E start is best is when trying start a hot bike. Anyway, one of the reasons us 650R guys walk with a swagger is due to the extra beefy right leg!

So I got the new XR650R home the other day. It was a cold day too, about -8 Celsius. Anyway I spent about 30 minutes trying to get it started for the first time... what a bitch... Took a while but she eventually fired up.

The next day I mounted the BD DS kit, no trouble at all. Still have to test it out. The bike is sitting in my living room right now because it was too cold (-15 C) to work on it in my unheated garage. Wife isn't too happy with it there, oh well.

Went to mount the ProTaper handlebars but discovered that the clamp adapters I ordered were the wrong ones!! The right ones will be here in a few days.

Tomorrow I am going to take the bike for a rip out back and hopefully that DS kit is hooked up right, I don't think I will get the bike back into the living room EVER again!!. And its too cold to work on it outside.....but not too cold to take it for a short rip!!!

For those who have wifes that say we spend too much time in the garage with our bikes, maybe we can convince them we want to spend quality time with them when they are watching their nightly soaps by working on our XR's in the living room while they watch TV? Just a thought...:bonk::cheers:

Try Trick Dual Sport's kit. I have run one on my 525 for 2 years. Ive put 3000 miles of rugged trail riding on this kit without a hickup. Dale, who owns the company can set his kit up for the XR give him a call. It is one of the most compact and rugged kits available. Here is the link.

I think I know why the bike didn't start so easy the first few times. I just filled the tank with 91 octane and it started on the 4th kick at -15 degrees. I think the dealer put 87 octane in the tank. Any way now it starts pretty easy considering the cold....so tomorrow I am taking it for a rip out in the snow and I will post some pics when I get back...

I think many new to the XR650R find it hard to start, and unless the fuel is old, the octane should not be a factor. Like Outerlimits stated, find out what the proper jetting is for your riding area as this will make all the difference. The dealer should have set it up for your area. When I bought my bike it was not jetted properly for my riding area, and it was a bitch to get started. I spent at least 30 minutes trying to get it started. :cheers: Also, once I jetted it properly, what I do to start it up the first time of the day- choke on, gas on, decompress and kick through three times, then let off decompress lever, kick until you find top dead center, then kick slightly past TDC, let kick start come back up to top and give it a good kick. And, remember do not give it gas (twist the throttle). Mine starts almost everytime first kick, if not second. Good luck, and look forward to many years of fun riding! :p

Nice new bike. I got the old style baja designs kit with out the LED tail light/brake light. Does anyone know if a led version would plug into my baja designs kit? Reason i am upgrading is my old one broke today after a jump.:cheers:

Also i was looking on the baja designs sight. I see you (chop) have a black baja designs license plate mount. Is that part #602070 License plate mount Assembly with hardware for $8.95? Or whats the part number for that item.

Yeah!!! Besides, the new pipe and other mods to my bike will bring us closer together. My wife is watching me type and she ain't buyin' it!
