Help!!!!!!!!!

I've always been a Honda guy, starting with my XR75 25 years ago. I'm back in Wisconsin now, land of ATV trails that are accessible to street legal/dual sport bikes. I've been looking for a 650L, but my snowmobilie dealer has a new 2005 Yamaha WR450F for $5,000. Different bike, I know, but it seems pretty sweet. It would bring the dual sport /getting a tag hassle. Do I go blue or stay with the 650L????

The 450 is going to be very tailored to the dirt. It is designed for 100% dirt.

The 650L is a compromise, even though it is heavily based on the 600R. But I have a pure dirt bike as well, so the L is a welcome addition.

Just figure out your riding desires, and go from there. If all your riding buddies have pure dirt machines, the L will leave you with a feeling of inadequacy. If your buddies are dual-sport riders, the L is a great choice.

5K for a 450F is tempting.... :devil:

If you're comparing a WR450F then by default you should also be comparing an XR650R. If your state is easy to plate there is no real reason to get a 650L over either. Between the WR and 650R that is a touch choice. I went with the 650R for the long term durability factor and easier to adjust valves.

I have both, well a 600 with a plate.

My '06 WR is a sweet svelte machine (California Green Sticker Bike), way more fun in the dirt! Fall down, push button and go at it again. I have all the mod's done (This is a must to make the WR run right). Remember $5k is just the bike and the start down a road of mod's and parts to buy or the bike will be a dog. They are very fast on the street too, but that also costs more to still see the DMV. We can't register Red sticker bikes for the road in California very easily.

The 650 is a bullet proof bike tried and true, not a bad thing to say.

But I still love my old grey mare, you will have to pry her from my cold dead body to take her from me.

My XR is more street than dirt now (Still hops curbs though) and I am now trying to dial in the jetting after a air box mod.

Good luck with your choice, I could not choose... I'd have to have both, sorry.

5k for a 2yr old bike sounds steep to me even new at dealer, I say get a clean XR650L with very low miles, under 1,000 for $4,000 and spend the other $1,000 on mods and gas, you will not be dissapionted.

Best bike in the world ...thats what they say around here anyway !

as previously mentioned its all in your riding preference. I have both a 650l and wr450.The 450 with mods is an arm pulling off-road weapon capable of most any type of riding and very reliable but a bit more maintenance intensive. The 650 is a reliable old air cooled beast of a bike extremely easy on maintenance and is a very capable TRAIL bike with a big soft seat. I desmogged mine relpaced the stock muffler and installed an edelbrock carb (absolute best mod ever was the carb) if its dry out it goes anywhere the WR will (but weight is an issue and it is slower) if its wet it stays parked and out comes the WR. The gear spacing on the 650 between 1st to 2nd sucks (huge gap) its a common complaint but other than that its big and comfy on the street.The 450 is great if motarding it is an option later on, BIG grin factor... hope this helps a little ....old school or modern take your pick.
