Light kit for 02 426

Does anybody have any experiance with a light kit? I mainly want a headlight, but I am thinking about dual sporting it next year. Anyone have any suggestions on what kit/how much/where to get it?

correct me if im wrong but i think you would have to mount up a battery for that... no offense but id just look into trading your YZF for a WRF.. it would be alot easier and probably cheaper

Check www.rockymountainatv.com I have their most recent catalog and they have a few different setups available. I don't have any experience with any lighting systems though...if you do it please post your results! I have the same bike and was thinking about doing it just so I could run some of the 24 hour events.

I put the ESL 380 on my 02

If I had to do it all over again, I would definitely buy the WR flywheel and stator, since it supply's more adequate power. With the 380 it was the bare minimum to supply all the lights, and keep a charge on the battery. If you go with the WR flywheel+stator, you probably won't even need the battery.

You didn't mention th eyear/model of your bike, so let me point out that the use of a WR flywheel/stator is only an option on a 400/426. It is, for all practical purposes, impossible on a YZ450.

Electro Sport or E-Line are what's left if yours is a 450.

And just because you only get 50 watts out of the system doesn't mean you can't run 75 watts worth of lighting. You just have to add a battery to cover the other 25 watts, and there will be a time limit on how long you can run without a recharge, but it works, to a degree.

He has an 02426 Gray, look at the title :thumbsup: And yes, the battery is a good way to cheat some extra power.. thats what I did but the time limit unill it died was a pain.

I'm thinking that the WR stator/flywheel may not be a bad choice. How much weight does it add to the flywheel? I'd like a little more weight anyway, and this would kill two birds with one stone. I have a lightened flywheel currently and it just isn't ideal for off road trail riding. Is there anyone who has experiance in making the conversion? Does this require a new case side, or a spacer, or is it pretty much bolt-on? Thanks for the replies guys! I really appreciate your help. hopefully I can get you a pic of what I'm working with currently. If I do end up doing this, I'll end up writing a step-by-step procedure for how to do this for anyone else thinking about it.

EDIT: I was looking at the above links, and am very surprised at how much the wr/flywheel kit is. any way to take these parts of a wr and make it work?

I would like to stay away from a battery, and all I want is a headlight for right now, I've been thinking about dualsporting it, and I've decided for right now I just want a headlight.

Is it possible to pick up a wr stator, and a wr flywheel, and buy some offroad lights (from say, NAPA) and wire them in?

I found this stator: http://www.electrosport.com/shopping_ignition_lighting_coils/prod_ignltg_str_esl380.html for 179$ I like the idea of simply installing a stator and hooking up some lower wattage "offroad lights" if i ordered this stator, would it be as simple as replacing my YZ stator, or is it a different size, which would mean a spacer or a new case side?

WR flywheel adds 6oz weight compared to YZ.

Did this mod to my 02 yz 426 was all bolt on, same side case no spacers.

Didnt use a battery,just put a votage regulator on it.Worked very well for me.

Lots of posts on here about this mod.

You must use both stator and flywheel from wr,as they are different size to yz.

If you buy the ESL380, it will work fine for just a headlight without a battery. Your lights will flicker at idle, down side there won't be enough power for turn signals later ... unless you get a battery. I had two 20watt bulbs in my headlight, and it worked ok, just enough to say you have lights... but personally, I would get the WR flywheel and Stator. Anything less is pretty much a waste of money. You wont be able to see far enough ahead with only 50watts.

The wr426 stator puts out 130 watts. The older wr400 stators only put out like 75 watts.

I have the WR426 stator on my YZ400. I also had the 45 watt stator. I WOULD NOT get the 45 watt stator. Spend the extra cash and get the wr stator.

Stator costs around $225

Flywheel around $150

(wow those prices sure went up) I got mine for $300.

check ebay. They show up on there from time to time.

Then you just need to rework the stator to work with the YZ cdi

The WR flywheel is nice but hardly noticable compared to the stock one. Its not overly heavy. It does help but dosn't slow down the motors snap all that much.

You will also need a voltage regulator. Those go for like $20.

I am using a Acerbis Blitz headlight. Both bulbs have been upgraded to 50 watt bulbs and wired together so I have 100 watts of lighting. Works great.

If your gonna put a tailight on it go with the acerbis or Bajadesigns LED tailight. They draw next to no power and they dont fizzle out from the vibrations like a normal glass bulb will.
