How many Miles

31 posts in this topic

How many miles on your XR. I have 23 000 km on my XR 650L. One of the things that attracted me to the bike was the simplicity of it's design and ease of maintenance. No problems to date. Any problems that crop up as the miles accumulate?

I have over 60,000 Miles on my 1995 XR650L, which is of 96,500 Kms. I bought it new in 1996.

My speedometer has been broken many times. Once, it was broken for well over a year. At the time, I was commuting 40 miles each way to work, for that year. The odometer reads 56,000 miles, so conservatively, it has well over 60,000 miles.

Out of 6 XRs I've had my 86 XR600R had the most miles 21 to 24K when I sold it after 3 years of everyday use 50/50 on/off road, it still ran like new and the engine was mechanically quiet still, much quieter than the later ones I had, my NX650 was tight but had low miles when I sold it.

I have 21,000 on my 04 XR650L. I've noticed some puffs of smoke recently, but it still runs great, never had any mechanical issues.

I have 12k on my 06 ''L'' almost all off road, I have recently bought a sumo set up for it and will start commuting 100 kms/ 60 miles a day to work. I'm

hoping it will last for a long time. Time will tell. I'm expecting my mileage will blow up over 20k per year !! :p

I put 25K on my xrr sold it and it's still running great. Guy that bought it even raced the Baja 500(finished ofcourse) with it last year. The xrr lasts as long as it is heavy. :p

The only answer is "it depends." I have had to redo my valves, but I'm almost sure it was due to me abusing the engine. I overheated pretty badly. I did a lot of mountain singletrack in first and second gear when it was well over 100F (40+C). I had to replace the valves and needed a couple of valve seats.

It was one or two years ago that I replaced my rings. They were completely worn out with an end gap of about .120 (3mm). The symptom was oil getting blown out of the breather.

I replaced a couple of transmission gears a few years ago.

My cam chain tensioner failed a few years ago as well. I put a new cam chain in with the tensioner.

Now this was about 95% hard off road on a XR600. Street miles might be a little easier on the bike than hardcore off road use.

The countershaft splines can eventually wear out. Mine have considerable wear.

I have a 2003 I just bought in Feb this year. It has 25000 miles on it. The orginal owner rebuilt the engine at 10000 and 20000 miles. The only problem is he had cometic gaskets installed and the head gasket was leaking oil at 25000 miles. He had Thumper racing rebuild it with the 675 kit and when I took the engine apart at the 5000 mile mark on the 675 kit. The piston looked great still cross hatches in the cylinder. I put a OEM head gasket back in and now I am waiting on the weather to ride it more. I am getting plates and registration in the morning!!!

Really? I have used the Cometic gaskets on Harleys and thought they were the good stuff. I have not used them on the Honda yet. Is there something here we should know?

Just trying to find the answer before I have a problem.

Hey Porkrider, I was looking through the receipts of both rebuilds. They where not Cometic gaskets that was used the last time it was rebuilt. A grphite head gasket was used at 20000 mile rebuild. That is the one that started leaking oil. Sorry for the bad info. I took the last owners word for the info.
