Wanted: Replacement Motor for XR650R

Looking for a complete engine for 2002 XR650r. I guess it may not be possible. Anyone have any ideas? Not really a common item?

you've got me a little scared...what happend that you need a new motor!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? Is my XRR motor gonna blow up too? :thumbsup:

I imagine it happens but is as rare as a blue moon. These bikes are bullet proof.

I don't know if I'd say bullet proof... More than one or two 'gotta rebuild' posts around here.

If I am not mistaken most of those have changed the motor considerably. 680 cc and such for racing. Remove those from the list and it just does not happen all that often. Run them out of oil and they will give up the ghost.

I'm sure like anything else there are exceptions. It's just not common if the motor is left in it's basic stock configuration with the power up changes, an Edelbrock and maybe a stage one cam.

We have a lot of top riders on here who put a lot of money in changing these bikes motors for desert racing. Anytime you do that with any bike you reduce the long term reliability. But for those riders it is worth it if they place well in a major race like the Baja 500 or 1000. The fact that they will not get 20000 miles out of the bike really does not matter.

Service Honda website is a pretty good place to look for a complete engine.

I think you could pick up a good running XR650R for less than a new motor would cost. I have only seen one XR650R motor for sale in the last year on E-Bay. The cool thing about picking up a second bike is you will never have to look for parts.

Here's the deal: You have guys that ride and then you have guys who ride hard. The guy I bought this bike from claimed he was a hard charger and showed me that he could do some pappa-wheelies n'stuff. :thumbsup:

Actually the guy was a full poser and my tech looked at the bike and noticed there was very little wear on the frame rail. The seller said he put 10K miles on it. I went back and asked the seller if he owned any riding boots. "No" :applause:

I rode the thing to its demise thanks to a faulty mod. Whoever did the mods neglected to replace the choke plate and it sucked into the top end. That may have done minor damage to the crank. The tech advised against racing it and he was right. It blew up. :ride:

BTW: THere was always oil and water and the bike was well maintained. :applause:

So with all due respect to my fellow hard chargers: :applause:

Scotty, sorry to here that. Though it is rare it does happen and you are not the first one to suck a choke plate into the motor.

How many of those mods you mentioned were motor mods? At least you will have them to put on your next motor. I still think it will be cheaper to get a second bike than motor. Try the Edelbrock carb next time. It doesn't have a choke plate.

I'm guessing it was yours, if not, bummer....

It's not all that common but happened enough that some folks change out the stock plate. It's not the whole plate that gets sucked into the motor but the little spring loaded flap in the center of the plate. If your worried about it pull the carb and remove the spring and flap. Here is a link to a after market choke plate to fix the problem.

I just took the choke plate off, and put the screws right back in. I didn't buy a new one. It made it a touch pickier to start cold, since there is no full choke anymore. Open the throttle fully while you find top dead center to give it some gas, close the throttle and kick it. Mine always fires within 3 kicks.

I did the same thing with my 600, just took the choke out completely including the shaft. When it's below 40 of so starting becomes difficult. If it's cold I just lean the bike over so the carb floods a bit. Then it starts first or second kick even it it's 30.

I thought the same as Old_Man_Time about the sheet metal flapper and just removed that piece, but I recently picked up a spare carb that the whole bottom half of the pot metal choke plate had broken off and gone into the guys motor.

I just sold an xr 650 r motor a few weeks ago!!!! :thumbsup: i also parted one out here last summer. I part 650r outs from time to time and keep the forks and wheel off them.
