Nx650 Or Xr650l Engine Into An Xl600r

7 posts in this topic

Has Anyone Tried To Stuff An Nx650 Or Xr650l Engine Into An Xl600r Frame. This Has Been On My Mind For A Long Time. I Know I Need A Complete Wiring Harness And Electrics From The Donor Bike, Not To Mention The Carbs, Rear Shock, Switches And A Modified Airbox To Hold The Battery. I Know The Nx Or Xr650l Will Fit Into An Xr600. Since Xr600 And Xl600 Engines Are Basically The Same, My Theory Is It Will Fit. My Main Reason For This Is The Benefit Of An Electric Start Motor. Btw Does The Nx Share The Same Wiring Harness As The Xr650l? Thanks!

Might be cheaper and easier to trade for a 650L. What do you like about the 600l chassis?

I have an 87 HONDA XL600R with the red white and blue color scheme with gold anodized rims and swingarm in very good shape. I am 5' 7' so the XR650L is too tall form me. I plan to replace the XL engine with the XR650L or NX650 to avail of the electric start. The XR650L is not only ugly, no offense 650L lovers, but too tall even with the lowering link. How much do you think is an XR650L engine is worth with the carbs and electrics. Thanks!

I had one of those. Nice old bikes. But better on road than off. It "should" be pretty easy to start (lower compression), yours is not?

I thought it might have been the seat height. I rode several XLs (250/600) and not only do they sit lower, but seem to have more power than the XRL equivalents (250/650)

I don't see many separate engines but you can buy the whole bike for about 2000 and up depending on condition. If you have an ebay account, you can dispose of the rest. I would guess the engine, carb, and elec would be worth 1500+ in good running condition. I rarely see any SUPER deals on these bikes like 250 2 strokes (sub $2k price range)...but every now and then I'll see a beater for $1500.
