650R starting tricks?

The twists before you go to TDC? I figure the moment I keep moving that piston around, some of the fuel I just prepped goes to the wrong place. I'll try it your way today, since I really don't like messing with the idle setting, although I am getting pretty darn good at it.

My gas is always on - could that be a problem? Bought the bike like that and never had any gas spill.

Guess I have to read that manual again and take another look at the Edelbrock setup. So far I've been blindly trusting the previous owner to have done everything right.

I never really thought about WHEN I twist the throttle, I did not think it mattered that much, maybe it does, I really don't remember how I did it last time. As to turning off the gas, I always turn it off after Iput it away as I have seen a few house fires from motorcycles dripping gas onto battery chargers and such.

When cold:

1 - Full choke,

2 - crank kickstart until you find TDC (Top Dead Center)(hard spot),

3 - ease just past TDC using manual decompression lever,

4 - return kickstart to top of stroke, give it a good solid boot

5 - do not give it any throttle !

6 - if it starts, turn choke off use a bit of throttle to keep it running, mine won't idle when cold.

7- if it fires then dies then

8 - Choke off and repeat steps 2-5

Mine usually fires then dies on the first attempt, then starts on the second go with the choke off.

It will not start with the choke off on the first attempt.

When hot:

1 - crank kickstart until you find TDC (Top Dead Center)(hard spot),

2 - ease just past TDC using decomp lever,

3 - return kickstart to top of stroke, give it a good solid boot

4 - do not give it any throttle !

Usually starts first kick, sometimes second.

This works for me, I have a stock uncorked bike, 172main, 65s pilot B53E needle
