xr600 to cr250 fork swap

6 posts in this topic

Has anyone done this swap? Looking to swap a 96 XR600 with an 89 cr 250. Does anyone know if it's a direct switch or even worth it to get the cr's inverted forks?

the 89 CR forks were very harsh and not many people liked them. I would try a newer year if you really wanted to have inverted forks.

My ATK frame was made to accept the 86 XR6 front assembly. So last month when I swapped the front end from a 91CR250 onto it, it was the same as putting it on an XR.

The distance between the upper and lower clamps was the same, the ID of the upper bearings were the same. As was the OD of both steering stems at the threads. The main difference for my swap, was the lower bearing.

The bottom steering stem bearing on the CR was larger than the XR. The quickest way to complete the swap, was to machine a sleeve, so that the stem from the XR could be pressed into the lower clamp from the CR.

All the sleeve does is to make the XR stem the same OD as the CR stem at the area where it is pressed into the lower triple clamp. Then it was a direct bolt on from there. Using the clamps from the CR, and the stem and bearings from the XR.

I will have to modify the steering stops somewhat, because the forks are fatter at the clamp area, and the clamp bolts stick out the rear and slightly interfere with the gas tank at full lock.

I hope this helps, but I know that alot depends on what year the donor bike is (CR), and what year XR you have.

Ive heard over on supermotojunkie.com that the later ones like 92-95 are a dirrect bolt on but to be safe, go over there and in tech post a question for Kubiak, or better yet, go over there and search for posts by Kubiak and send hima PM, Im sure hell be able to tell ya, as he did I think, 93 CR250R forks on his 89 XR600R.

If you use that web address in my signiture line, it will take you to my feeble attempt at building a web page. On there, there's a pic of when I first built it.(1989)

I will get more soon.

The response you posted about Kubiak is spot on, I was going to mention that, but thought the mods may pull it because it is a link to another web site. If I remember correctly, I had a post deleted by a mod once and the only reason I could see for him doing it was that I had mentioned a competing 4-stroke web site.

Kubiak's bike are sweeeeet!
