650L jetting (again)

6 posts in this topic

hi guys. sorry to be bringing up the subject of jetting again but couldnt find this covered in any threads.

i have a 96 650L with daves mods, de-smogged, big gun pipe. after carrying out daves mods the bike wont accept full throttle, it just dies. runs fine everywhere else but as soon as you hit wide open, zip.

i have tried messing around with different needle shimming (up, down and sideways) but to no avail. anyone got any ideas?

You need a bigger main jet. Dave's mods recommends a 58 pilot and 158 main, but this is known to work with the stock pipe. You might need to go as high as 165 on your main jet. See what other L owners are running with aftermarket free flowing pipes.

The needle affects 1/4 -3/4 throttle, the main jet affects 3/4-full throttle...

Mine was doing almost the same thing, wouldn't quite die but ran like crap.

The solution was a new carb, never could find anything wrong with the old one,

it only had 700 miles on it. If you can find one to borrow it might be worth a shot to try.

Good luck, keep us posted

Some things to check:

1.) Do you think you might have a problem with your float level causing the

carb to run out of gas?

2.) Could your float needle be sticking?

3.) When was the last time you cleaned your float bowl?

4.) Is the diaphram on top of the slide seated & sealed properly; not leaking?

5.) Is the slide sticking?

6.) Do any of your vacuum hoses looked cracked or could they be leaking?

7.) If you blocked off any of the vacuum fittings, are you sure they are

sealed?

Even if you have a jet size too small, the bike shouldn't "die" when the throttle is opened. Maybe some popping from being too lean, but it shouldn't die.
