Kill switch issues

Recommended Posts

My bike was running great the other day, loaded up and took it to my favorite riding spot the other day and it wouldn't start. Tried the magic button, kick and bump starting. Finally after wiggling some wires behind the headlight, it fired right up. Now the kill switch doesn't work, but the start button did.

I finished the ride and pulled the kill switch today. After pulling it apart, I noticed a couple of spots where there was some bare wire (just a couple of little nics). I applied WD-40 to drive out any condensation, dried and then re-wrapped with electrical tape. Re-installed and still nothing.

I pulled the switch again, and the only thing in there is a metal connector that when pressed, completes the circuit between the two wires which then kills the engine. I pulled the start button and swapped t in place of the kill and it did allow me to kick start it. But the kill still doesn't work. This leads me to believe that it is in fact the kill switch and not further down the electrical line.....how many of you have had one go bad? There is nothing in there to go bad? Just the wires and a connector? :ride:

Where is a good place to get a replacement.....Yamaha says they don't have an aftermarket one and Rockymountain didn't shw one for my bike. :ride:

Those are definitely different -

Have you tried them yet? Does it have the connector that fits into the wireing harness?

i have both the starter and the kill switch on my bike..

and no...no connector included...just cut the wires...and splice them in.

a soldering iron and some shrink tubing makes short work of it.

10 minutes tops.

I replaced both start and kill switch with a unit off of an R6. Bought it on eBay for $12.00. This one might do the trick for you http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/KAWASAKI-EX-250-EX250-NINJA-STARTER-SWITCH-CONTROLS_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ35594QQihZ004QQitemZ140005373449#ebayphotohosting

There is also a unit off a GSXR500 in his online store that looks almost like the one I have on my 04 WR450. It takes about 10 minutes to install. 2 wires go to start and 2 wires go to kill. Easy and it looks and works a lot better than the stock switches.
