A new WR rider

In 1977 I got a YZ400 - I was 14- 140 pounds and could not touch.

Looped twice in the first mile-then it was the greatest thing ever! :ride:

My son road my 05 WR450 last year, he was 13 then so I left it restricted as this was the first bike he had ridden with a clutch. I think it depends on the kid, you obviously know if they are sensible and have common sense (which I'm sure yours does Rushfan). Initially he was very cautious and had good throttle control. If anything he would occasionally drop it when the weight got the better of him but other than that loved it. He is now 14yrs 5ft9 160lb and the bike has the free mods done, as his confidence has grown so has his use of the power and he loves it. He has also ridden my mates 450x, and another's '06 Wr250 with free mods and he doesn't like the 250 now he's used to the 450 grunt. As for lowering the bike Rushfan, set the sag for him, but I don't think I would wast my money on changing suspension linkages or seats at least see how he gets on with it to start. The kids going to grow fast and my bets are he'll get used to it in no time. When he's a bit older and grown I would take Matt 05's advice and get the suspension professionally set up. I think at 5'8" seat height wont be as big an issue for him as the weight. He will definitely drop it a few times. I think I would put the throttle stop back in and reconnect the Grey wire (if it was unplugged). Coming off an xr 100, the wr 450 will feel like a tank to him, but he will get used to it fast. Thats a hell of a gift, your a cool dad. Have fun and be safe....

If you can help find that link, that would be great. But I was thinking of just shaving the seat down like the way I did mine.

Yes. That's a good idea, and I thought about that. I'll do that, and leave like that for the rest of THIS riding season, and see how he does.

I agree with you about him dropping it. I know that it's gonna happen, and will happen a lot. I think radiator guards are a must, and a worthy investment.

Also, lowering it is not something that I was considering, at least for right now, but I will shave the seat down like I did mine. Shaving the seat put me more IN the bike, instead of feeling like I am on top of the bike. It lowered the center of gravity, and helps with cornering. For my Son I think it will do all that, but also make the bike feel a little less top heavy too.

Right now the sag is set up for the guy that I bought it from. It's very stiff. He is 6'8", and about 350lbs :ride: . I'm not sure about the sag, other than returning it back to the factory settings. Maybe you can advise me on that.

Other than that, all of you guys are not only giving me a lot of great advise, but a lot of support. Thanks to all... :ride:...

After I put the throttle stop back in, I don't think that I will have to do the gray wire. I'll kinda feel it out though.

But yeah, I agree that it's gonna feel like a tank. Sometimes mine feels like a tank to me too. My old xr400 did for sure... :ride:

If the previous owner was 6'8" and 350, he probably changed to stiffer springs? You might think about finding some stock springs so you can adjust for your sons weight. I'd call the previous owner and ask what he did suspension wise...

It still has the stock springs on it. Other than the free mods, that's it. And i'm the one that did the free mods in the first place. I set the sag for him soon after he bought it to the best I could with the stock ones. I'll go back to the factory settings.

I marked a point on the fender using a marker pen to make it easier. I think it's between 3.5 and 4 inches. Look in the manual from Chapter 3 page 36 for the standard settings on rebound and compression. I was reading on TT last year one Saturday night and taking advice from Indy to get the Unibaker rad guards, we go out the next day my son slid the bike sideways on a bank and bent and split the left rad not a big get off, he was fine. So more info from TT used Mylers got the rad fixed then bought the Unibakers here on TT, highly recommend them, the bikes been dropped, slid and dumped on many occasions since and they are standing up well to the abuse. Then went through one clutch and two brake levers so I now have Fastway hand guards with the combined damper mount,(recently got my Scotts damper from TT as well).

Good idea on fitting the stock throttle screw, I think hell be ready for more power after 5 or 6 outings, you could then cut it Midway between stock and YZ lengths before going all the way to YZ length,( 20mm to the underside of the screw head).

In the beginning of the summer, my Son went to spend about 3 weeks at my Father in laws. He has a ranch and my Son goes there to work...his fifth year in a row, and gets a chance to learn some good work values and get paid for it, during this time, they all go to a fair the for a week and show birds and goats...also getting paid to work. about a $100 a day. :ride::ride:

...sorry for the blahhh blaaahhh My point is that he'll come home with $$ burning a fat hole in his wallet. So, I will let him buy all of the nice trims for his new blue bike. Lots and lots of stickers, i'm sure.

don't apologize for the blahhh, I do the same with my son, encouraging him to work. He is hoping to earn enough to buy his own bike this summer, if he gets part way then I can help him with the rest, Couldn't afford to buy it for him at the moment. Sorry about last post going over the sag but I was still typing between your posts and didn't see it until it was too late.

Ok...Today is the day. The only thing is, I'm not going to be able to put it in his room. It just won't work out that way. I'll let you guys know what happens. I might even send a pic or 2.

he'll be just fine. I went from a ttr125 to a wr450f when I was 15.

Keep us posted :ride: Im curious as to his reaction to his new Thumper and how he does on his first ride :ride:

Ok guys, here we go.

First, I have to say that all of this has been fun. All of you guys have been very supportive and encouraging. I new from the start that this bike is a little too big, but all of you have giving me the support and advise that I was looking for. I was thinking that I might be a little :crazy: for doing this.
