what length chain for 14/48 gearing?

Howdy, I'm going to order a new chain and sprockets later this week but I don't know if the 110 link chain is ok for the new 14/48 sprockets I'm going to order. Also what will the new top speed of my bike be if I go with the 14/48 setup? Thanks. flubber

my 03 L model needed nothing but the sprockets, and just adjust the chain when instaling, you will love the gap closed between 1-2, and the 2-3 torque offroading !

Will my bike still be ok on the street with the new gearing? I ride about 85onroad and 15off. No interstate riding, mostly highway and gravel roads.

If I'm correct, stock gearing is 15/45. The L guys I ride with swear by 14/45. Going to 14/48 will take ALOT off the top. I would say it would be great for tight trails, but it will not be good for street over 60mph without revving the shit out of it.

Mine will still hold 85mph easy on the highway, you have it almost pegged, but it doesnt get hot. Maybe its the synthetic oil..lol

This is mostly an offroad worthy mod, but even on the streets the gap at 1-2 is crap. So I think you will like the lowered torque range (Got wheelie?).

Hmmmm, maybe I'll start with the 14 tooth front and go from there although the 14/48 would probably be perfect for the wheelies I've been teaching myself how to do the last couple of weeks. Got wheelies? Give me a month or two and I will!!!

WOW! 15 45 stock on an L! My XR was 15-48 stock, I went to 15-42 because it is tareded and I ride it mostly on the street. I get 102 top end out of it now when stock it would nudge 90. But I live at 7420ft and ride around at about 5200-6200 feet unless Im going or comming from home in the mountains. I love the street gearing so far but may go to a 14 counter and live with the 95 or so top end and better low end. Stock it was no problem for third gear wheelies...now it is good thru second and it feels like I have another gear on top! Very nice! 14-48 is way high for an L, you'll loose all the power off the top, probably wont do over 80 at redline! Oh and I forgot, stock the chain was 120links and the gearing was 15-48 so you should be OK as long as the swingarm and frame are the same on a 96 XR600R which I think they are or close! Good luck!

completed my 14 / 49 sprocket swap, alot better all around! It's to me like the way it should of been geared in the first place!

some questionable info here, so far ... the XR650L stock is 15/45 with a 110-link chain ... the stock chain will allow a 14/48, with wheel slid forward ... offroad 14/48 is outstanding, but very buzzy on the highway ... I switched to 15/48, (and a 112 link chain), and after just one offroad ride, I'm going back to the 14/48 ... hope that helps ... :thumbsup:

I'm still undecided on the gearing I'm gonna go with. I ride mostly on the highway although I do venture off road sometimes. Mostly gravel roads with the occasional atv trail thrown in the mix. As of right now with the stock gearing, 15/45 I still can't put my bike in top gear until I hit about 62 mph or so. I need something I can offroad with along with the highway riding. I know I'll never have the best of both worlds but there has to be the perfect setup for what I'm looking for. Trial and error it is I guess.....

if you're doing that much highway, then go with 14/45, do NOT go to 14/48 if you're planning on much highway riding ... simple ... 14/45 won't hardly affect your top-end speed ... the stock gearing is almost too tall to even pull 5th gear well, anyway ... :thumbsup:

Thanks for all the help. I did end up going with 14/45 sprockets. All I need to do now is remove a link from my new chain. The chain adjuster is at #35 which is too far back. Flubber

Anyone switch between off-road and motard wheels with 2 sets of gearing????

I wanna run 14-45 for Dual-Sporting and drop a few teeth in the back on my Motard wheel, I'm currently running a 15-45 on both set-ups, and it's too low on the street and too high in the woods, it's like the worst of both worlds.

Would I have the adjusters maxed out if I dropped down to a 42 on the rear with the stock 110 length chain?
