Went riding this weekend and ran into problem that I need help to solve.

XR 650R with HRC Tip and uncorked.

68s pilot, 170 main

Stock air filter

Riding between 6000 to 8000 feet at 75 degrees

Valves adjusted about 150 miles ago and no problems running for last 2 weeks.

Rode for about an hour and everything was fine on mostly logging roads.

Bike started to backfire occassionly and started to really blubber and finally came to stall out. Kicked it over and started after several minutes and would run good for about ten minutes and then same thing would happen. I repeated this scenario for next 20 miles to get home. Bike would run through gears fine and accelerate good until it ran for about 10 minutes then wouldreally blubber then stall. Let it cool for 5 minutes and away again. Any thoughts would be great.

Might want to check your valve clearances again, sounds like the intake valves might be tight

Checked valves and carb late last night and everything was in spec. I did not check float level though. Any thoughts on this

Check your fuel tank vent hose.

I have had similar problems with a truck when the magnetic pickup in the distributor was going bad. Could very possibly be in the electrical system. If you feel the carb is ok and you are getting fuel. I would start looking at the spark, when it quit's running. See if it is week or none at all. Till it cool's down. This is a common electrical problem also in coils. When they get hot they quit working when they cool down they work

I had the same problem and cleaning the pins on the CDI box/harness connections took care of it. At first I was thinking the pick up was spent, but after calling Ricky Stator to buy just a pick-up, he told me he has never seen one go bad ever on a Xr650r and would send me one if I payed shipping; crap he was right.

However, I would suggest making sure rubber intake manifold is in good shape with no cracks and tight at the clamps. I have seen pictures of the intake boot with a crack right in the middle, making it lean and causing it to pop.

Also, check you can try to check your fuel tank pick-ups. Theres a small screen on the top of the tube that goes into your tank. If its clogged, you might get this problem.

Had something similar to this but with a QS carb. First 20 minutes was good then started starving for fuel. Float was on the low side...ran great for about 5 minutes then started starving, but no backfiring. The screen on the fuel petcock is what thumpmeister is talking about. CDI is under the seat.

I was referring to the spade connectors on the CDI and the harness cap to it under the seat, I had light corrosion on all the spade connectors on my 2002 and while out on the trail the bike would sometimes cut out and die. It my not be your problem, but it's worth checking out. Good Luck!

I assume it is electrical but check everything anyway ,the process of elim is the go.

If it was a KTM i would say it's the stator but BRP stators are pretty foolproof i think xr650 may be on the money.

Got it.....the fuel line from tank to carb was pinched at the bend. Tried everything else first and then some riding buddy comes over and points at the fuel line bend. Looked okay but in reality it was limiting fuel supply under load. Trimmed length a little and then put back on and runs great. At leat now I know that my spark is good and valves adjusted and carb cleaned 4 times!
