GYTR Clutch Kit 2006 YZ450 Help!

Heres a good one for those knowledgeable with the 450s: I purchased the GYTR clutch kit #GYT-5TA56-30-00 and it either has wrong parts included or my bike is missing parts. This kit includes 7 plates, 8 fibers, 1 seat plate, 1 thrust washer and one oddball friction plate. This kit lists for the 2003-2006 YZ450s

My bike doesn't appear to take the seat plate, thrust washer and the oddball friction plate... at least these parts didn't come out of my machine. They look exactly like 426 clutch parts to me. I thought they ditched these parts in the 450 :applause:

Anyhow if I were to use this kit, I would be short one friction plate.. if I threw out the oddball one that came in the kit. So heres the real question... Am I supposed to install these extra parts and use the oddball friction plate (like the 426) or is GYTR selling the wrong kits for the 450s? Thanks

The only thing I can think of is that it is a universal kit......but I don't know if Yamaha change the clutch for 2006....here is what I would do....go to you dealer tomorrow and check it out and see if you got the right kit.

There is one friction plate that has a larger inner diameter than all the others. This will allow room for the seat plate and thrust washer to fit inside it. On a 426 this is the first fiber plate that goes into the basket. Then you would install the steel, fiber, steel, fiber etc.

Yes, you are supposed to use the full set of parts, and yes, it builds up exactly like the '01 426 clutch. They did ditch the boss spring and associated parts in '03, and the clutch acted exactly like the '00 426 clutch because of it (noisey, grabby, obnoxious). Put it together as intended. It works. :applause:

If this is true then why wouldn't Yamaha be putting these parts back in their 450s? Seems strange that they would ditch the parts, then sell them back to you in their GYTR kit.

I put a clutch in my 06 450 a week ago...these are the parts I used, these and these only:

qty 9 plate, friction 5TA-16321-00-00

qty 8 plate, clutch 2 5JG-16325-00-00

I soaked the friction plates for about an hour (only need about 15 min, but i got a call from work so i had to take care of some things) and, per the book, put oil on the others before installing. Just remember no steel-steel contact in there, meaning put them in this order: 1st friction - 2 steel - 3 friction 4 steel - etc etc - 9th friction

just go to this link and look at the clutch parts diagram...you shouldnt need those other parts.

Yamaha Canada just got back to my dealer today on this issue. According to them this kit is an upgrade and should be used in the 450. So thanks Grayracer :applause: You are right once again.

I have no idea what was behind the addition and subsequent deletion of the boss spring, etc, into the '01/'02, and then back out of the '03, either. The '03 clutch was a fairly foul thing as delivered, and was actually worse than the '00 a lot of the time. But they fixed it without those parts, at least to some extent, because no 450 has ever had them from the factory, and the '04 and up worked OK. The GYT-R (Hinson) kit is a definite upgrade, though.
