15T Countershaft Sprocket XR600R

I remember reading sometime back about someone asking if a 15T countershaft sprocket would fit on an XR600. Don't remember if this was metioned, but the case saver will not fit with the 15T sprocket. I just installed a 15T sprocket, removed the case saver, made some new spacers for my sprocket cover and all went back together just fine.

I have used 15Ts on XR600s quite a bit. I take a little metal off the case saver with a grinder to make it fit. I'm sure it is weaker but better than nothing.

i was needing a case saver anyway so when i bought a 15T sprocket i got the 15T case saver from xr's only. ordered a red one, was called and told they didnt have red in stock and they would send a regular colored one, couple of days later a red one showed up. i wasnt going to complain. figure it will work when i swap back to the 14T or even the 13T that came extra with the bike that ive never tried.

Yes, I'll probably do that. I didn't even think about trying to make it fit, it looked pretty tight.

I rode around with the 15T today, and what a difference. That is exactly what I needed. I now have a 15/51 setup and it works great for the street. Don't ride on the freeway much, but around town at 45 - 50mph I can be in 5th gear and it is just cruising.

Hey I know this is an old topic but it's the most recent one I can find about 15t sprockets and case savers on XR600s. I bought a 14t front sprocket on the weekend because I didn't think the stock case saver (eBay bargain with sprocket cover as well) would fit with the 15 tooth that is currently on the bike.

I wasn't thinking about the side plates being bigger than the rollers :lol:, and when I removed the sprocket, (turned it around the right way) and put the case saver in the gap and then the sprocket on the countershaft, it fits (just). I rode it around the street and there's a little bit of a squeak at times when I'm backing off and at some other times. Should I try tightening the chain a bit (it looks quite loose, but I'm used to sports bikes) or get the grinder out and take a poofteenth off the case saver to be on the safe side?

I found the quotes below in various threads, some people have no issues but some people do???

I hear about people not being able to fit a 15t on their 600s and can't help but wonder why I can. :thumbsup:
Some have reported that 15t countershaft sprockets do not fit under their XR600's stock case saver. There isn't much room to spare, but I fit one under mine.
I had to grind my cs to fit the 15 tooth sprocket on my '97 XR600.

I was also looking at the same thing. I think i will have to get a 15 tooth and see what the deal is. The XR has been promoted to full time dual sport, so i wont be riding it as hard as i do the CRF. If i cant grind the stock one down to fit, i think i will just remove it.

There is no way in hell i am paying 50 shipped for the XRs only saver. I am about done with those guys as there is always an issue whenever i order.

I use an XL600 sprocket cover / case saver unit to fit around a 15T sprocket. I would bet that an XR650L unit would also work. I think in some countries the street legal XR600s came with what are usually regarded as XR650L covers.

Is there evidence of the chain rubbing on the case saver?

Only set the chain slack when the rear suspension is compressed so that the rear wheel is at its furthest point from the countershaft. Adjusting chain slack with the bike on a stand will make it too tight when riding. Lots of inexperienced XR owners set it too tight because the chain looks too loose when the bike is parked.

If i cant grind the stock one down to fit, i think i will just remove it.

Think about it this way: can you replace the left side crankcase for $50?

I am using a 15t with the stock saver.

I use an XL600 sprocket cover / case saver unit to fit around a 15T sprocket. I would bet that an XR650L unit would also work.

Both are interchangeable with an XR600's saver. :smirk:

The stock 1990 case saver fits with a 15t sprocket. Don't know if they changed them from year to year though.
