XR650Ls, do yourself a favor!!!

Hey guys,

Just got back from an AMAZING trip in Baja last week on my 650L. I LOVE my bike, BUT, do yourselves a favor and maintain the hell out of your countershaft and drive sprocket, specifically the splines. I'm sure there are other threads on TT about the subject, but it seems to be word-of-mouth-type knowledge that you should replace the front sprocket every time you replace your chain and keep the splines greased up good.

Mine stripped all to hell the furthest point south we were going (out side of Mulege) and I might still be down there had it not been for some extremely helpful locals. Unless you get a kick out of tearing your engine in half, HEED MY WARNING!

A quick fix for the counter shaft, weld the sprocket to it....it will last till u can tear it apart. replace chain and both sprockets all at once.

Yup,

That's how I got my butt back home from Mexico. A 'mechanico' with a 'solder machina' was a twenty-five mile beat-up-pick-up drive away. Now I know better with the sprockets. It's just so hard to dump some seemingly good sprockets, plus, the first time I changed the chain on the bike I actually did change both sprockets only after being laughed at by the honda parts guy for being "too paranoid" about the very slight wear on them. To hell with that guy, change your damn sprockets frequently!

I have seen several several XR650L's and XR600R's lose the splines. On my friends XR650L that had this issue we decided that is was a cheapie aftermarket countershaft speocket that caused the problem. My XR600 is starting to show some wear there, and I plan on replacing the countershaft before it fails.

my 01 XRL has about 5,400 mostly road miles as near as I can tell. No noticable wear on the rear sprocket or chain. Is this something that I should have been checking?

Only if you use poorly made & improperly fitting non-OEM (aftermarket) countershaft (or drive) sprockets, or if your stock ones are worn out. It's always good to check sprocket & chain wear often per the schedule listed in the Owner's Manual.

I've been changing out between an aftermarket 14t css & the stock 15t one on my '98 XRL with absolutely no fitment or abnormal wear issues. The aftermarket sprocket is made by Sprocket Specialists. Same brand I've used since the early 80's when I went with a larger css for my bullet-proof & highly modified '82 XL500R. No problems then and none now...
