Unbelievably reliable XR650R

I've always heard the XRR was very reliable, I know mine has been for more than 8000 miles now

I came across a thread on another board (mostly long distance riders) about this subject, and those guys freaked me out. 80,000 km XRRs without problems, one guy going 20,000 km between oil changes on his BRP.

To think I feel guilty if I go for more than 300 miles without oil change...

I think I'll feel a bit more relaxed about maintenance from now on.

Well, it is a Honda after all.

I put over 14000 road miles on my 1979 XL500, before stripping it for the dirt. Now, 27 years later, it is still running strong and I have never had to do anything to the engine except change the oil and set the valves.

You are talking about longevity of the motor. This is different than reliability of the motorcycle. I own an 01 XR650R and a 98 XR400. Also owned a 97 XR400, a 97 XR250, and two 85 XR350s. Reliability of the motorcycle has to take into account possibility of radiator breakage, hose leakage, overheating, thermostat failure, and water pump failure. If I had to select one motorcycle to get across any type of desolate, forbidding, scarry country all by myself with no chance of rescue, then I would not think twice before rolling out the XR400. This is the definition of reliability.

Yes, there are many more reliable motorcycles. My '74 BMW R90 has 100,000 miles without rebuild.

However, for a race bike the reported reliability of the XRR is stunning and way more than I expected.

How ofton does one have to set the valves on a xr650l? i just got mine and was just wondering.
