Rear wheel bearings, L

Had to change the rear wheel bearings on my 04 L and there isn't a seal on the inside of the stock bearings. Not the dust seal, but the flat seal on either side, (normally), of the bearing. Of course there was some grunge inside the bearing from playing in the mud. Why would Honda do that? Is it common practice on the XR's?

I've wondered the same thing. Perhaps they are 10 cents cheaper. I have always replaced them with the normal bearings that are sealed on both sides.

I can't think of a logical reason not to put one there and like you said probably less than 1 cent cheaper. :ride:

Just got a '94 L with only 2700 miles on it and had the rear wheel off, noticed the rear wheel bearings felt a bit rough so replaced. Was also surprised to find no seal on the back. Bearings had crud in them. If they aren't going to put one on the back, don't put one on the front so at least they can be cleaned and greased by hand. Replaced with fully sealed bearings.
