IMS tank for '06...

14 posts in this topic

Have been waiting patiently for someone to build an oversize tank for the '06 450 for longer rides. Bought one from ZipTy Racing the other day, a 3 gal IMS which mounted up perfectly and is only minimally wider than stock at the shrouds. The groove under the saddle needs to be lengthened approx 1/2 inch to make the seat ride far enough past the post on top of the tank. That was the only custom work needed, i just used a dremel. The front of the tank mounts securely to the frame using the oem mount unlike some other IMS tanks. OEM mounts, petcock and fuel lines are used as well, making it a 20 minute switch max. :ride:

I wasn't real impressed with mine. The stock fuel line had to be replaced because it wouldn't reach the petcock.

The petcock leaked which required sealent.

The tank shrouds barely fit back into the mounting holes on the new tank. It took 2 people to put them back on. 1 person pulling hard to get the holes lined up, the other putting in the bolts. I don't hold them completly responsible for this one though. I have some unabiker radiator protectors that the shrouds were also attached to, so with 2 aftermarket parts its hard to asssign blame.

I've had them for about 2 months now and they work good so far.

I can see that with the rad guards it would be a tight fit on the shrouds. I've had mine on and off a half dozen times at least already and it is a breeze. I also had a petcock from a WR tank so I was able to mount it with the lever out and I have reserve too! :ride:

The lights are for looks only. They don't really have a practical purpose except for helping make it street legal. Its a battery powered enduro kit from sicass.com. It'll work until someone comes out with a stator. The headlight lasts about 12 minutes.

I had the same problem stretching the shoruds to fit. I have the Unabiker rad guards installed as well. It was actually pretty tough doing this by myself. :ride: Overall though, I am pleased with the look and fit.

Your bike looks great. I'm having the same sort of graphics based issue where I can't find anything for an '06 SE yet. Struggling to come up with some decent ideas. I'd like to go black rims, white #'s on black and white hand guards. Not sure how that's gonna look with a fairly custom graphic setup.

IMS and Works Connection here too. I had to trim about half the "spine" that was behind the radiator on the shroud and carve out a notch at the bottom of the radiator on it to get it to fit right. With doing this, the shroud will fit well with the spacers that Work Connection provided and I don't have to play tug of war to get the lower shroud bolts in.
