Oil temp dip stick XR650L

I would like to know what the temp range should be on my

Oil temp dip stick .I was driving on the freeway at 70 mph for about 15 min.

about 80 degrees ambient , temp on the dip stick temp was 250 +

How hot is too hot .Whats normal ?

I was worried about that myself when I first bought my bike. I bought a temp. dip stick, and found that my bike ran around 250-275 depending on my riding whether it was street or dirt, in temps around 80-85 degrees. I heard that 300 degrees was getting up in the red area. I also have a buddy, FUCT from TT that bought a bike from a dealer who drove it (xrl) 160 miles or so with out any oil due to shop error, before it seized up. These engines are pretty solid.

"shop error" HA!!! I'd be sprayin lead all around this said "shop"

Good thing they don't let the mentally impaired own guns.

Good think they don't let the mentally impaired own guns.

Or his Mom.

With all the mods I run around 200 to 220. 300 is hot IMO.

The oil dipstick is an indicator only again IMO. I've been watching it for some time now and 250 is high for me, hard running trails, but again if your not in the 300 range all the time I'd be happy with 250.

Changing the oil is the key. High temps change it more often. I change the filter everyother oil change though. Just don't think it necessary to change the filter cause it's a pain. I'll change oil every 1000 miles or so. You can also take a little on your finger from the dipstick and get a "feel" (no pun intended) if it's super thin or dark change it more often. Every bike and rider is different I just got to know it and base my 1000 mile interval on by own riding.

It is statements like that which give the second amendment a bad name.:ride:

Or his Mom.

I run consistently around 250-260ish on the highway depending on outside temp. 300 would worry me. I havent done much tight trail riding since i tossed in the turkey thermometer so i cant give a number for that.
