Is there a key on an 06 WR450?

35 posts in this topic

I know it sounds stupid but i havn't seen one yet, and mine is on order, Gonna put a dual/sport kit on her and wondered if it has a key or not like the the YZ450. if not is it hard to put on on there. I want to be able to drop into a place to eat on the road without having someone drive my bike away cause it don't have a key..

Nice, can you post some pictures of your ride with the factory blinkers and key?

I just visited http://www.yamaha-motor.com.au and checked the WR450F and it's the same as the canadian model, no blinkers or plate bracket or anything, maybe your dealer modded it for you.

Same up here, they are retro fitted by the dealer (or Yamaha importer in Aus) with lights and key for road use.

These are all Yamaha parts - some come in kits so you may be able to order and fit yourself.

Back with a few pics. These lights came in a Yamaha kit from Japan- special order from the dealer as this was a first "on the road" for a WR Yamaha here.

The head light and tail are standard and the inicators look a lot smaller than the ones in AUS. You can see the front indicator just to the right of the key (2nd pic) - no fancy neutral, high beam and turn signal warnings on this though...

Some one previously suggested the key was from their Quad bikes.

Just for info

You'll have a lot of fun exploring exploring the back country of "the rock" with it that's for sure!

Don't fall down any fjords with it!

Actually I don't live on the rock, I live in the Labrador part of NL, tha mainland, ther are alot of old back roads here i can go on, as I done it when i grew up here on my old DT125 and DT200, and Cr125 i had before, but close by in Goose Bay is the best place, all kinds of sand dunes, roads, country, so i have to make a rack to put behind my 8.1 litre avalanche to bring her with me....

wait, wait, wait a minute. before you look too much further, check out this link:

http://www.electrosport.com/electrosport_dakar_intro.html

this dual sport kit is really nice and come WITH a keyed ignition switch. this will take care of all your concerns, looks nice, and since you're buying a DS kit anyway, check out this one. i have two Baja Designs kits on the XRs, so i've never installed one of these and have no experience with them. the new easy install BD kits are very similar in some respects (all the goodies are housed behind the headlamp) but have no keys.

i think the TT store might sell these kits. i think they are distributed by White Brothers.

Thanks, i have seen this one before but it comes with headlight and tailight/fender assembly too, and i don't think i need that as i have a headlight already, maybe i can get the ignition seperately though.

You can easily add a OEM Yamaha key switch to your WR. The key switch for the TT-R 125LE is a direct plug-in on the WR. Well, almost, anyway. It's wired the same but uses a different connector (which took all of about five minutes to swap...just pull the pins and insert into the WR connector.) Cost was $50 at the local dealer and the extra cost was worth not having to deal with wiring it.

Here's what mine ended up looking like:

key switch 1

key switch 2

key switch 3

looks good, the key comes coded with it i guess right? how about the lock nut and the bezel with the writing on it? Also, did you unplug your kill switch and use that to plug the ignition harness into?

It comes with two keys (one has the wide, weather protective cover on it) and it includes the lock nut and black metal mount you see in the photo.

Nope they are yamaha. All the WR's are sold in australia with the kit on it. The push button ignition and engine start switch etc are included in a special kit with instructions from yamaha on how to remove the blinkers etc and move the bike to just offroad.
