rear shock campatibility

Found a Showa rear shock from an '87 XR600R and wondered if it would fit a '88 XR600R?

I'm not 100% sure about this, but I don't think they are compatible.

why would someone with a '88 XR600R care if it fits a 650L?

I can tell you that the shock did change between 87 and 88. That doesn't mean it will not fit.

because later on he might want to put the latest model shocks in it

I guess there is a difference between fitting and working....I have a 94 XR650L shock on my 86 XL600R frame...Did it fit...NO....Did I make it work....Yes

because later on he might want to put the latest model shocks in it

Your no reservoir shock wouldn't be an upgrade

i dont have a 650L, so i didnt know that, and you would think it would have a reservoir, even my 00 xr80 had a reservoir on the rear shock

Thanks guys for the help.

I guess I'm stuck pulling the shock off and rebuilding it. I was hoping to save some down time by just swapping out shocks.
