needle clip position?

My question is, can the needle clip position effect the idle?

If the clip is still in one of the grooves, it usually will not.

Cable(s) need lube? Slide is worn? Maybe you just need a good carb cleaning? When were your valves adjusted last? Nah, prolly in the carb....

Hanging idles are caused by either physical issues like binding or misrouted cables holding open the slide, or more commonly, a lean idle condition.

To troubleshoot the latter, start by doing whatever is possible to adjust the mixture using the idle speed and fuel screw. If that fails, look for something that might cause an air leak, like a crab isolator (manifold sleeve) that's shrunk, etc. Then, if you still haven't solved it, check for tight intake valves. These will lean the idle by reducing the strength of the intake vacuum pulse. Still nothing? Check the crab for blocked jets and jet cross holes carefully. If nothing yet, see what bumping the pilot jet does.

Leave the jetting solution for last; it used to run right with the ones that are in it now, right?

Ok.... here's what I did to the carb recently:

1. went from a 175 to a 180 main jet

2. tryed a 48 pilot jet, didn't run good went back to a 45

3. got new throttle cables, lubed and ran them correctly. plenty of slack

4. gave the carb a good cleaning

5. cleaned the slide

and here is where my problem may be coming from:

when I clened the slide, the carb cleaner made the gasket on the slide plate get all loose and out of shape :bonk: so what did the genius do? I cut the gasket and removed the extra rubber. I know, I'm an idiot. a new one is on order. this must be where my air leak is. I can fully close the fuel screw and the bike still idles high and it won't come down. it's like having cruise :confused:

the only other thing I can think of is I didn't know how to adjust the throttle stop screw http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y90/derznki/top.jpg

By the way the bike runs great from about 1/4 to full throttle.

idle to 3/8 not so great it feels like it surges a little. in a word: inconsistant

A hanging idle can be caused by an air leak? How do you go about finding an air leak?

from what I've read you find an air leak by spraying carb cleaner one at time on the possible leaky spots and watch for the idle to climb

I just wanted to say that I fixed my hanging idle problem. here is what caused it (for those who might have a similar problem), the plate gasket that I cut got sucked in to the motor and the plate actually broke. I guess from excessive vibration. Air was leaking around the slide causing a very lean condition. With a new plate and gasket the bike runs like a champ, idles perfectly :lol:

here is what NOT to do:

Do not get carb cleaner on any rubber gaskets or O-rings

if the plate gasket gets damaged replace it and don't ride the bike with out it.

if I would have known this I could have gotten a kickstand for my bike rather than a $100 slide plate :ride: Oh well, live and learn :crazy:

BTW this could have been a lot worse. I could hav had the metal from the plate come loose and get sucked into the engine! :ride:

Speaking of diagnosing problems, now that the hanging idle is fixed I can barely get the bike to idle at all now. I have the idle screw all the way turned in and it idles really low. could this screw be the cause, it's the one circled with the #1 by it:

I know it can be adjusted but the manual doesn't say how many turns. any help would be appreciated

I haven't ever messed with the Throttle stop screw period. I don't see how it would affect idle, but I could be wrong.
