XR650L hop up

I'm writing to see how much horsepower I can get from a XR650L. I know there pretty tame in stock form. Can I get it over 40 hp without too much trouble and money?

low 40 stock. Uncorked like 45 and another $1K in performance mods (pipe, cam, bore, high comp piston, valve job, ect.) will bring you close to or over 50.

:thumbsup: Are we talking about the street legal air cooled bike or the water cooled bike. I thought I've read the air cooled bike only make 30 hp and 30 ft lbs torque.

From the factory, jetted too lean and corked, it has about 31 hp. With correct jetting and a good pipe, but no internal engine mods, you can get to near 40. Better carb, hi compression piston, etc. you can get over 50. These are rear wheel horsepower numbers.

Here's a page from a guy who did all the mods. He mentions stock is 30 to 32 hp, and he dyno-ed it after hop-up's at 55.

I've seen results for a stock XR650L rearwheel dyno at 23-26 hp more than once .. my modified XR650L runs like a scalded ape, and I'd be surprised if mine is much over 32-35 ... :thumbsup:

Cheap and easy...I've got an '04 650L. 1. Better air filter(UNI or K&N) 2. Carb-55 and 158 for the jets, shim the needle a tad, and drill the two holes in the slider (NOT THE CENTER ONE!) to 5/32's.

A whole lot of go for under 100 bucks.

Also changed the sprockets to 14 and 48.

I see no reason why a 650L couldn't put out at least 50 HP with enough $$

An air cooled Rotax 600CC engine can put out 75HP rear wheel Horse Power dependably all season long. No liquid cooling needed.

Simply send it to TLC racing in Akron, Ohio. They make the ATK's screem! Flat trackers swear by them. They can do the same for an XR650L.

Sounds like what you might want to hear is something that the XRL wasn't meant for. You can do all the engine work you want but it comes with a caveat. Reliability goes way down. If you're going to race your XRL, then more attention to the motor and maintenance is going to be required so maybe it's no big deal? :thumbsup:

The L wasn't necessarily designed for maximum hop up, though it surely can be done since it basically has the same (detuned) motor as the XR600R... :thumbsup:

Those are the exact same mods I did to mine, in addition to removing the snorkel and a few other things. While it's still not an 'R', it made a noticeable difference.

As far as the post about 61 hp stock - not in their wildest dreams! The most consistent (and believable) figure I've heard is 32-33 hp stock. The 'L' wasn't designed to be a race bike - with the right mods it's a pretty darn capable DS/trail bike, but I wouldn't ever consider racing it. By the time you dumped enough money into it to make it halfway competitive, you could've just gone out and bought a race bike, and kept your XRL relatively stock (and stone reliable) for the next lifetime or so.

Stock ther HP is low. Do Dave's mods and maybe you get upper 30's or 40 at most. A pipe, cam, and a hi comp piston gets over 40. Getting over 50 means a lot of mods.

Riding for most people is not really about hp, it's about torque. The 650L has at least 2x if not 3x the low end torque of the 250. That lofts the front wheel over obstacles and makes gnarly hill climbs possible.
