I-Cat xr650r

Hi

I have a question has anyone of you guys installed I-cat in BRP ?

If the answer is yes ,please write some opinion is it worth to install that in our beloved xr650r.

Dydko i now put an icat in every bike i own,they start, go better and better fuel mileage as well.

Put one on my Toyota hilux and it went better as well.

Sorry i didn't answer properly yes i have one on my xr650r and i believe it improves the bike.

I-cat is pricey for a capacitor-discharge system. about 10 years ago I purchased a similar system from Nology located in San Diego for about $40. I noticed a slight improvement on my 2 smoke but not sure about an improvement when I transferred it to my 4 stroke. the same company also sells coils (~$80) and I installed one on my bike and noticed a slight performance improvement with that mod.

BTW, Dirt Bike mag did a test on the I-Cat when it first came out and reported no noticeable change in performance, although it looked cool if you had the extra $200.

The icat is very simple to buid if you can get the diode they spec, but that 'exact' part has been discontinued over a year ago and is no longer available. The icat has been discussed many times here on TT and on other forums as well, including the details on how to make one for ~$5.

There are people on both sides of the fence for this product and other ignition type products, but I've still never seen a good independant test that shows a repeatable performance gain on a dyno from the use of this product on a modern 4 stroke off road bike that's been 'properly' tuned. The two people that I've personally talked with in person who actually had icats could only tell me they felt they were ripped off because the only thing they noticed was that they thought their bikes started a little easier sometimes, but that's about it. You can sometimes find new and used icats on eBay for as little as $20 and as much as $200+. There's currently somebody on eBay who says they were the test and development team that brought the icat to the off-road market and they're currently selling this product on eBay for the Buy It Now price of $60 USD plus $12 USD shipping from the UK and as of right now, they have 8 left at this current price in their current auction.

Gadsan I was the original importer for the iCAT in Australia,i sold hundreds and hundreds of them and had only one come back even with a money back guarantee no questions asked.

The unit that came back was faulty.

I have noticed that for every ten or so favorable articles there is an article out there that bags it so i figure "sour grapes" or Tall poppy syndrome theres always goint to be one or two antidissestablishmentarians.

But what would i know,all i know is i like my BRP it's not the fastest or best handling bike i own but i'm getting old and i don't need to keep rambling on and on and on about whatever we where talking about.And anyway it's time for my nanny nap.

I don't need better performance from my XRR but an increase in gas mileage would be nice. Has anyone seen comparisons regarding that?

Gnarly i can't say for the xr650 as i put an iCAT on before i had ridden it,but everything else i own gets better mileage with one.

My cr500 was the most improved mileage wise it seemed that after putting the iCAT on i could ride it a lot longer on a tank,my Toyota hilux 's mileage improved by about 50km's(35miles i think) for a tank of juice.

Now that was a very interesting read. Makes you wonder what the deal is. 4strokes.com did a very positive review and claimed it was the biggest power gains for the money they had ever experienced. Im glad I didn't get one cause I was really considering it for my KX500. :thumbsup:

I need to see the dyno charts. Remember the Nippondenso "U" spark plugs? They made many of the same claims (more HP, mileage, easier starting) and for the same reasons (alters spark characteristics). I tested them against NGK 's and concluded, after several years on the same bike, that the improvements were negligible. They cost double what the NGK's did but even at that, plugs are cheap compared to the I-Cat. To be certain of a mileage increase one needs to drive a prescribed course at the same speed during the same weather using fuel pumped from the same batch and do it several times. A dyno chart tells all but only if done under the same conditions.

You can't help but noticethat you put less fuel in the tank than you did before,have done all the double blind tests and everything i own uses less fuel when fitted with an iCAT.My wallet can tell the difference everytime.

And no the dyno doesn't tell all,remember the old KTM 495,well she made less power on the dyno than any other open bike of the day,but on the track flipping thing was a nightmare probably the fastest stock dirt bike ever made.

The current KTM 250 sx is nothing like what the dyno tells me to expect on the track.

The dyno tells us a set load not how fast it will get there,in the real world things are not the same.The iCAT revs quicker but it doesn't show on the dyno that much

I am not knocking the dyno they are a real world tool,but all is not a dyno.

Cfamd78 i didn't answer your post,mate i am not a sparky and it is a bit technical,the iCAT web site has all that gumbo on it.

I got a few units in from the manufacturer in late 02 (i think) and i was impressed with the system and i took it from there.

I can't find my glasses guys so if this is a bit screwy my apologies.

I'm talking before and after dyno with the same bike. If someone can show me an improvement in hp or torque the I-Cat has made, I'll be convinced.

buy a phillips diode BY8424 encapsulate it in automotive epoxy with two screws at each end to fix it in line with the HT lead. install it with reverse bias (opposite flow to current) there you have an I-CAT for less than $5
