Transmission for XR question

9 posts in this topic

my question is, does anyone know of a transmission kit for a 2000 xr600r? i have one that is dual sported out, with a 14/45 tooth combination, and am just trying to find a kit that would make 4th and 5th gears a little taller. or does anyone know of any other transmission gears that would fit in it out of any other bikes?

Not as far as I know, but I hope someone proves me wrong. I'd like a taller 5th too.

The only thing that I could suggest is changing out your primary gears with the HRC kit gears or the 650L's primary. It will take you from 2.18:1 to 2:1 primary. I don't know how well this works off road but it help mine on the highway.

Thing is that does nothing for the ratios of the transmission gears. Just changes them all. Drive sprockets are way cheaper than that. Just going to a 15 tooth countershaft sprocket will be about the same percentage change.

Very true, a 15/48 or 15/45 setup would mean higher gears but I think he is looking for close ratios between 1st 2nd and 3rd then wider 4th and 5th. Sprockets are always the cheapest way to change ratios but I dont think its the change he is looking for. Changing the primary would be the same as changing sprockets, all gears would be higher. I have never heard of a kit to make 4th and 5th higher. I would like an even wider ratio between my 4th and 5th on my L, it would run lower rpm's while on the high way saving gas, it would also increase top speed.

If you install a 15 front and a 45 rear, like what is on the XR650L, you will have a top speed in Fifth gear at over 115 mph near redline.

The XR650L and the XR600R share exact same gear ratios in ever gear except first.

You can download a copy of my spreadsheet from this web page here if you want to see the math and graphs.

The main advantage of changing the primary drive is the durability of the transmission. People who put huge tires on trucks without changing the rear end often blow out gears. When gears have high loads and low speeds, it increases the load placed on each cog.

The other advantage of the HRC clutch/primary gear is it allows you to gear up even taller if needed.
