'05 to'06 450F Oil question

I searched this but mostly 05 info..Was there a major change in the 06 and the 05 because I read all of this oil in the frame talk and have no idea what anyone is talking about. Never had the '05 but have the '06.

Changing oil in the 06 seemed very straight forward. I just took off fill cap and dipstick, unscrewed the drain bolt on the side and drained it. By the way the manual refers to a gasket on the drain plug and I did not see one am i missing something? Then I put drain back in, filled it started with gallery bolt loose until it dripped, checked levels which were good and was off again. Am I missing anything or is it just this easy? I will do the filter and oil again after tomorrows ride but straight oil change seemed easy....

There should have been two drain points, one for the crankcases, and one for the internal oil reservoir.

The '06 is essentially exactly the same dry sump oil system as all YZF's have always been, except that the "tank" is now located within the engine case, though it is still separate from the sump.

Do the filter every time.

I thought there might have been two....Why and where am I missing the other? Bought a bunch of filters today they were $18.00 each does this sound right?

There are two as well as a drain for the oil filter (which IMO doesnt do much but save some mess).

1 - shifter side, near breather tube toward front of engine

2 - brake side of motor, INSIDE frame rail toward the rear of the bike

refer to your book, it shows where they are exacly.

The gasket they refer to is probably the copper washer on the drain bolts.

I use a scotts filter - 69.00 one time purchase. My last bike got over 60 oil changes and im sure my 06 YZ450F will as well, as it already has 6 changes...

$18 that is too much, you dont need "expensivez' filters but, just a constant chaning of the filter. If you ride 3 shorter times change the filter the 3rd time. Never try to push a paper filter more then 13 hours.

I'm with ya...last bike was a 98 CR 125 and I thought this would be the same.. I will hit the manual hard and figure this thing out...Pretty easy to buy a bike not so easy to learn how to maintenance it I guess. Thanks for all the help....

Ken,

I go through my manual before I do anything to the bike because of the little things they change, like having the 2 drain plugs. I had a hard time finding the second one even after reading the manual. Good luck with your bike...
