Wr400/wr426 Interchange

9 posts in this topic

I got a 2000 WR400 and a 2002 WR426. What parts will interchange?

Looks like radiators, shrouds and tank are different, what else?

How about the forks, motor and wheels? Does the frame have the same head tube angle?

Lot's of stuff, wheels, seat, tank, are different but they fit. I think the rake for the head is different the forks should be the same but ya never know lot's of stuff is the same. The clymer book is the same for both.

At least on my 2 bikes, the factory wheels are not the same. The rear will NOT interchange and the front is different but might interchange with some machine work. Forks, tank, triple clamp, and seat all interchange.

Anybody know if the rear shock assembly and clutch components will interchange?

The wheels do swap.

I run an '02 rear wheel on my 00 wr400. The 99-02 hub is the same but the spacers are different. The front wheel will fit but the 02 has a larger front rotor so you need to swap out the caliper carrier too.

The 02 swingarm is different than the earier 99-01 swingarm B/C the swingarm pivot is larger on the 02 > 06 bikes. the linkage and and the shock length changed in 02 too so they wont swap unless you change it all together along with the swingarm pivot collars in the motor to match the swingarm pivot.

The clutch on the 00 is a 7 plate and the 02 is an 8 plate so it wont swap ...maybe the plates will. Of course the whole motor will bolt in except for the aformentioned swingarm collars.

The forks bolt right on. So should the tank and seat and all most bodywork. The 02 rad shrouds have an ageld lower mount while the '00 is flat.

Now you got me wondering! When I tried to swap the rear wheels, the wheel on the WR426 had a larger diameter brake disc that would not clear the top of the caliper in the WR400. I then switched discs, tried it again, and found the measurement from the sprocket to the disc to be different and the disc would not clear the Scotts disc guard on the WR400 and additionally, looked like it was not quite in the center of the caliper. (Scotts makes a different disc guard for each bike) I then measured the opening of the swingarm of the two bikes and found that to also be different. The axle is also different as are the spacers and the adjustment blocks. Even if I get all this stuff to work, I have a new concern that the wheel might not be in the center of the frame which will affect tracking and handling.
