No. That engine uses the original external oil lines.

Has anyone else had issues with this? Did the dealer just reinstall? Is there a service bulliten on this ?

It's the second instance of it I've heard of here. kelstr reported the other one about a month ago. The oil passage is the replacement for the old external return line, and runs from the oil pump in the right crankcase across to the left, into the ignition cover at the rear, then back to the crankcase at the front, and back to the integrated oil reservoir. If it was mine, I would just stake the plugs in and not worry any more about it.

What I like about the set up is that having the return circuit exposed to this extent makes it possible to tap into it and divert it to an auxiliary added oil supply for off-road or other long distance endeavors where you might want an expanded oil capacity.

Smearing silicon over the plugs will do nothing but make your bike ugly.

Just to keep you updated. Tech spoke to Yamaha who, of course, denied ever hearing of such a problem. They offered to buy me a new side cover to replace mine (mine WAS new 5 minutes before the oil came out) and claimed that the 2 to 3 minutes of runtime post-gusher shouldn't be an issue.

They now have my Vin# on file for this so it makes me feel mrginally better. I refused the new side cover, as you probably guessed. However, I had the Tech stake the plug AND put JB Weld over both plugs on the cover. You can't even tell the JB Weld is there as it is the same color (more or less) as the painted cover itself.

The one in the rear is the one that fell out on mine. Shot oil all over the back of the bike.

These oil leaks and lost drain plugs make me nervous, never have I followed these plugs so closely as I've done now with this new bike. :thumbsup:

What's positive though, never have I had a thumper with so little shavings in the oilfilter, 3 oilchanges already. And the bike was broken in hard.

Once staked in, they could still potentially leak, but they wouldn't be able to fall free, and the leak would be far less in magnitude than if the plug was gone, obviously, so it would be far less of a problem. Probably no more than a few drops. Bad, but not disasterous unless ignored.

JB Weld (a good two-part epoxy), as many goofy images as the name conjures up, is not the same as smearing "Silly Sealer" over the ends of the bores, as was earlier suggested. Actually, if it's done right, it should add a lot to the integrity of the cover, and I would even recommend it. Just remember that the cover is painted, and that paint should be removed from the top of the plugs, and the insides and ends of the bores before applying the epoxy.

If there's only been two occurrences of this reported here, it's conceivable that a dealer tech would not have heard of it yet.

Read a little bit earlier in the string... there is an explanation of what 'staked in' means.

Its still better than having to tighten your cam chain every ride.

Add another blown out igniton cover oil galley plug to the list. Despite staking the rear facing plug it still blew out in the first ten minutes or riding the bike. KEEP AN EYE on them. Luckily I noticed it vey quickly and shut the engine down prior to any damage. I have since taped and plugged both orifices. Again this can be a big issue that destroys your motor very quickly if not caught.
