Pushed on what?

Took apart what?

In some cases dirt gets into the passage where the actuating rod sits in the carb body and creates enough of an obstruction to prevent the spring that operates the pump (wrapped around the slide pulley) from being able to push the rod and actuate the pump.

When this happens you need to remove the rod and clean the passage. Smoothing up the rod with some emery paper also helps.
