Buy a 250F or a 450F?

I'm thinking of getting a brand new one. Which one should I get, the 250f or the 450f? Is the 250 alot lighter (feeling) than the 450? How much less power are they?

A couple parameters are:

~I'm 5'9" / 160lbs., In good shape.

~I'm approaching +35 class rapidly, only race outdoor style tracks.

~I come from the days of cr500's, etc.

~I've got a yz400f now, so I understand what heavy is.

Any constructive feedback would be appreciated.

I pondered the same question for a long time too. I have an 05 RM250 and went to an 06 KX250f and guess what... I am longing for more hp! The Kawi is for sale and I have an 06 YZ450f on its way as we speak. The 250f does have great power it even pulls 3rd gear through slow turns better then my RM250 but unless you like to ride wide open all of the time it just doesn't have enough in my opinion. I am 37 in good shape too, about 150lbs and 5'9". I am a pretty aggressive rider and just found that the 250f required alot more work to keep moving fast. I thought the lightness would be great but the lack of snap to clear obstacles frustrates me... I was coming up short on almost everything and only tried the big triple once at my local track in 4th and still came up short. :thumbsup: Anyways, it is just my opinion and it may depend on your where you ride and how aggressive you are. Again, it is 95% rider, but the 450f will allow you to make a stupid mistake in a turn then still get up and over an obstacle, where as the 250f won't. Good luck with your decision. :thumbsup:

Yeah the power on the 450 is really nice. I rode my friend's yz450f and it has alot more power than my 05 yz250f with a pipe, jd jet kit, ect... I would only use the power of the 450 on wide open areas like ice or supermoto, so I opted for the 250f. It kinda depends on what kind of riding you do. Either way the yamaha is a great bike and I don't think you will regret it. But seeing that you race outdoors you might want to go with the 450.

Your going to get killed on the start with a 250.

I have both, the 250 is lots of fun but the 450 is a better race bike.

It all depends on your riding style.Around here alot of the tracks let 250f's ride in the 450f class.Beg.-Int. and its not unusual to see the 450's get spanked.It usually depends on the track- alot of hills or straights.If you like to keep the revs up go with the 250f if not go with the 450 and when that little turd on the 250f blows by try to roost him the next time.(You've got the advantage there)

I have both. The 250F is a great practice bike. You can ride 30 minute motos all day long. But it doesn't have the snap to do big obstacles out of corners. The 450F doesn't feel that much heavier, and will get great starts and jump everything. I'd say go with the 450F.

Thanks for all your advice guys! I've been leaning toward the 450 all along, but what some of you have said (about power to help get you over the next obstacle, etc.) would always be a benefit. Plus, I will need the bike for more than just the track, as I do it all for fun (ice=fun). My best days were 10yrs ago, and those couldn't exactly be defined as great......

~~?~~ One more quick one. Is there a major difference between, say, a '03 yz450f, and the brand new beauty??

Go with the 450....

According to a number of people on here, the 450 can actually "feel" lighter. I know the review in Dirt Bike stated that although the Yamaha was heavier than it's competitors, every rider stated that it felt the lightest (compared to all the other 450's)

I have an 04' 450f..... that I love.

The 2003 had the hardest hitting Powerband of any of the 2003-2006 models. It was called "violent" and sometimes labeled "uncontrollable" ( I think that's a bit overstated, but somwhat true on a MX track) It was known for wearing a rider out due to it's hit and also it's engine braking. Yamaha then slightly remapped the ignition for 2004, which calmed it down slightly, added 48mm forks (2003 had 46mm) and also added Titaniun footpegs. The 2004 became a little more refined, and better handling than the 2003.

For 2005, Yamaha calmed the engine down further (some said too much), and again improved the suspension .

The 2006, appears to have all of the positives, without the older negatives of the 2003-2005 models (smaller, more agile, better turning, better distribution of power, etc.)

If I could convince the wife to sell my 2004 and get a 2006, I definately would.

I also had YZ 400f . I went to a crf250 for light handling. But as stated earlier, You have to ride the p_ss out of a 250f to go fast, like you would a 2 stroke. I just bought the 06 450 LE and it handles better in the corners and is as light in the air as my 250f. Only thing is ...It takes less effort to go faster and I dont have ride it like a 2 smoke.

I just bought an 06 450, and I love it! I,m 5'9" 169lbs (+/- lunch). I'm 34, be 35 in April. My last bike was an 02 yz 250 2 stroke. This new one feels as light or lighter than my last one. Absolutely love this 450 and will never go back two smoking again. :thumbsup: As for the 250f, I could not help you on that one, but I don't think you would be disapointed with either of them. I will tell you that the guy I ride with is thinking about going to the 450 from a 250f because of the power. It is easier to ride sometimes. Good luck!

Did the CRF feel cramped to you? I'm 5'8", I didn't like the feel or lack of power. I'm currently riding a 04 YZ450.

Yeah if you ride ice, definitely get the 450. My 250f feels like a minibike out on the ice compared to 450's.

I have a 250f and a 06 450f. If you ride on the track only no question get the 450. If you ride in the wood, hare scrambles and enduros it would be a tuff call but I would still go with the 450.

It's funny you say that because I finally got to take my new 06 450 out to the track for a little break in period and on the first jump the bike felt lighter than my 05 YZ250. I was extremely impressed with the way the bike felt in the air. Absolutely the best bike I have ever ridden.

Well here is the way I look at it

If you have big furry coconuts, get the 450.

If you have little pea size marbles, get the 250F

I bought and own them both. I'm not as empressed with the 2006 YZ 250F (Stock) as I was with the 2002 250F.

The 450 is my main Race bike. This bike is equivlent to my 2002 250F for weight and turning and the motor is equal to my 99 400. It is the BEST Stock Bike available. All bikes with kick azz, after some $$$$ spent on them. The 2006 450F, is race and or ride ready STOCK :thumbsup:

If I could only own one bike.....this 06 YZ450F is the ONE!!!!!!!!

2003 YZ450F = BEASTLY BRUTE (to hard of a HIT, Turns equal to your 400)

2006 YZ450F = Bueaty and the Beast(smooth power, no hit, ride all day, TURNS like no Yamaha , this 2006 is NO YAMAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
