Larger rear tire

Hey Gang,

I am looking for a little help with the rear tire sizing vs. handling for my 2001 WR 426. I am currently running the Maxxis SI 110-100-18 This tire replaced a Michelin S12 130- 80- 18 both tires worked fairly well in the woods of South Texas. Lots of sand and generally soft overall.

My only issue with the Michelin was the few times it was lit up on roots it started chunking real bad which is OK considering that is not what it was designed for. That being said the bike is properly set-up and handles good overall. I was looking at the Michelin S12 in the 140-80-18 that some of the guy’s here are running. Can someone tell me how the larger rear tire will affect the handling overall as well as cornering in deep sand at race pace? Would the slight lift in the rear require the forks be moved back down in the triple clamps? I am thinking that the larger rear may help me put more power to the ground rather than exploding my way out of the corner spraying sand half way across the forest and going no where.

I know that smooth is fast but I am still working on that. Any thoughts would be most appreciated. Thanks.

I run nothing but the S-12 / 140, make no mistake it will put alot of power to the ground :thumbsup: I run my forks as far down in the clamps as I can but not because of the rear tire size...... The tire will not work as well as the 130 through softball size rocks at speed but it will perform exceptionally well in straight line and cornering conditions. Our sand up here in WA state is always wet and heavy so I don't know how it will compare in the sands of Texas :thumbsup:

I love the S-12 tire, I found them for $60.00 at a local shop and I can afford 4 or 5 rears in a year so the life span is really not an issue. The only issue I have is that a fresh 140 will just barely rub the inside of the can on my FMF Q when I bottom out, but I just installed heavier race tach springs so hopefully that won't happen as much.

My advice is go with the 140 size S-12, just warn your riding buddies in advance not to follow too close :bonk:

I ride through a lot of New Mexico sand. When I went from a 110 to a 140 I thought it would climb the hills better. It did a wee bit. What I really notice was that I had to lean it over a bit more and hit the gas harder to get the rear to steer.

Don't be fooled by tire sizes between different manufacturers. Michelin uses a different measure than most other brands.

Michelin size 120/80x19 = 100/90x19 Conventional sizing

Michelin size 120/90x18 = 100/100x18 Conventional sizing

Michelin size 130/70x19 = 110/90x19 Conventional sizing

Michelin size 130/80x18 = 110/100x18 Conventional sizing

Michelin size 140/80x18 = 120/100x18 Conventional sizing

Michelin size 90/90x21 = 80/100x21 Conventional sizing

Exactly.........infact the 140's I buy have an additional yellow sticker on the sidewall that indicate 120/100X18
