Electrex Dual Sport Kit Battery Question?????

17 posts in this topic

I have the Electrex Dakar Dual Sport kit on my bike. Not long after installation, the battery went Bunk on me. I tried their re-charge instructions 5 times and no success. So, I emailled their tech and he told me I need a new battery and to take mine to "Radio Shack" to save a few bucks.

The battery inside the unit is from "House of Batteries". I went to their site which is a total joke, and got no answers!

Has anyone else had this problem? and where should I get a new battery?

The H.O.B. # is # HB1.2-2.12(12V1.2AH) if that helps.

It's a "Maintenence-free Sealed Lead-acid Battery"

Any help would be appreciated!

Thank you,

Eric_Mc

I haven't opened up mine, but those type batteries are common UPS and Home Security System gel batteries and are usually between $10-20. You need to see what the dimensions are of the one in there, and just google it.

You'll find something like this:

http://www.batterywholesale.com/battery-store/proddetail.html?prodID=221

My old KTM 620RXC uses one like this.

hey gaspipe!

That looks like the right battery!

Measurements add up and all, but what is the diff in the 1.2 and the 1.3?

The original is a 1.2 and the replacement on the link shows a 1.3A.

I have no knowledge of this type so I am hoping you can fill me in.

I appreciate your help!

Thank you!

The difference is the 1.2 aH battery is a bit dimensionally larger, and is significantly heavier. The link has both batteries in it, I think. the 1212 is the 1.2ah, the 1213 is the 1.3ah.

I'd get the 1.2ah battery, and plan on replacing it from time to time. Heat and vibration lay waste to them, but for $9 a throw, it's pretty cheap. I've not opened up the e-trex unit, but make sure the battery can't bounce around in there. if there's any movement, get some foam and secure it from moving around.

KTM wanted $80 for that same battery. That's why I did a little diggin' to find an alternative.

Thanks :applause:gaspipe!

There is a little sticky foam tape in the unit to prevent vibration and then it was electrical taped around the connections and that end of the battery. I think once I replace my battery, I will put some additional padding in and wrap with the electical tape again also.

I am also, waiting on my stator! Maybe I won't fry the battery so quick this time?

hi gaspipe!

On the link it shows the 1212 as"original" battery and the 1213 as "replacement". I need to contact them, but maybe they discontinued the 1212?

Uh oh.....you found me out. I've been here for a while, but just lurked in the background. Decided to share some of that stuff stored in my head.

Now Eric, on that battery, unless you have a specific for more aH's, just stick with the 1.2aH battery.

Ok,

I replaced the battery and my kit doesn't work!

Has anybody else had this problem?

I just sold the bike and reinstalled the kit for the buyer and it doesn't work.

I charged the battery first and it isn't the problem!

I disconnected and reconnected 5 times and it ain't working!

Could it maybe be the key switch?

HELP!!!!

Fuse is good.

I have been pulling my hair out on this!

After installing the Dakar Wiring harness and connecting the "jumper" and everything, I have 1 brown, and 1 green male and 1 brown female wire not being used on the OG stator harness.

The gray female on the CDI is not being used either.

I have pulled it apart and reconnected it 5 time like I said, but am not having any luck.

All of my connections appear to be good and tight.

I think I might just buy the guy another kit and let him F with it?

I am likely to put a bullet or two in this thing!

You probably dropped a ground of when re-installing the kit, as for the battery, on my Baja kit, I oped to NOT go with one of the cheap ass ni cads they wanted to sell me for 20 bucks, and go to batteries plus and get a 3.9ah GelCel for 21.00. I installed it in, yes in my airbox, the air box has humongous holes in it for flow, and it works great and powers the whole bike for 2 hours without the motor running. your problem sounds like a grounding problem to me!!!

Thanks everyone.

I got it figured out.

My kit is the older version (2 1/2 years old) and the regulator ground wire as "S.T.B." just asked about, needed to be pigtailed on the battery neg. That was the whole Freaking problem!

I lost sleep over a stinking Rookie oversight!

Well, at least I can sleep tonight...ZZZZZZZZZZ!

Thanks again for the helpful suggestions!
