Extreme weather means extreme measures

Hi,

Here in north we have problems with digital speedos because they freeze up if temperature goes below 0 centigrades. This means atleast 4 months of driving season here :bonk:

So here is my fix for that

You take a gripwarmer element

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c372/tmckeown/Lynx/88df2a58.jpg

cut it in half and resolder wire between halves

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c372/tmckeown/Lynx/IMG_0909.jpg

Then you get a box that will with fit your speedo and install modified gripwarmer in there with some insulation

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c372/tmckeown/Lynx/IMG_0911.jpg

Then install speedo on top of gripwarmer

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c372/tmckeown/Lynx/IMG_0912.jpg

Cut a hole on the lid and put on its place

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c372/tmckeown/Lynx/IMG_0913.jpg

Put lexan screen on the box and install it on the bike

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c372/tmckeown/Lynx/IMG_0914.jpg

Do all the wiring needed and put resistor between gripwarmer wire 5ohms/10W to cut some wattage of from it. Put a switch for it and voilá

No you can heat up the speedo when ever it start to freeze :applause:

excellent!!!! good write up!.

:applause::bonk::cry::cry:

Your one tough dude to be riding around in that weather. If it gets into the 30's here in Cal I can't move let alone ride!

So is Conan O'Brian really a star in Finland?

Hi,

We go out with bikes as low as -25 celsius / -13 fahrenheit. I think we have -30 celsius /-22 fahrenheit limit to keep races :applause:

Conan a star Hmmm... let's put it this way that lot's of people watch his show but a star... nope

Timo Mc

You guys got an engine warmer? How do even start a bike at -13 F? I have a real hard time here at +20 F :applause:

What weight motor oil do you run at that temp?

Hi,

Castrol GPS 10-40W, you just have to cover radiators and use thermostat.

Timo Mc

Thank You God for letting me be a Native of California-Whacked people and all. :applause::bonk::cry::cry::cry::p

What is the resistor for?

I put grip warmers on and don't think I used a resistor.

Hi,

Resistor is for lowering the wattage of that gripwarmer. I measured surface temperature on gripwarmer without resistor and it goes up to 60 celsius / 140 fahrenheit :applause: . So just keeping it safe and not from melting anything.

If you buy a gripwarmer set it has a resistor with it that you can use for the low setting.

Timo,

What thermostat do you use? I figured covering up the radiators would be sufficient. Do you have a picture of your setup?

Thanks,

it allows you to have a high and low setting. some people wire it with the clutch side on high all the time because the bars pull a lot of the heat away. i use oury grips and with the high setting the grips get real soft!

Nice job Timo.... :applause:

Hi, sorry no pictures yet :applause: because I have not put a thermostat on my bike. But talked to my friends around and they said KTM EXC has the best suitable for it. I need to get and put mine in before feb when we start having iceroadracing competitions.

Thanks Timo.

BTW, I'm very curious about European ice racing. The tire technology is quite different. Do you have some good links regarding Euro rules, or I guess in your case, the rules in Finland. Is this website a good reference?
