DRZ vs WR

I've never owned a DRZ but I have ridden a WR426. I'm coming off of an 02 YZ250F. I ride technical trails and tight woods. I was thinking of getting a WR450F but I'd like to consider all my options. Opinions?

In addition to the DRZ400 and a WR450F I'm also considering the following bikes also: CRF450X (if they aren't eating valves) and a KTM 525.

One of my best friends has a 01' DRZ and he loves it. I like my 99' WR400 but wish it had the magic button. I am looking at a WR250 myself. Your going to get a lot of different views but in the end it comes down to what style of riding you do and your ability. Neither bike has given us any trouble, both are very durable.

I like to ride aggressively and fast paced. I'd say I'm an intermediate level rider...I've been riding for 4 years. I bought the 02 YZ250F new in 02 with the intention to ride motocross. I found that I like cross country more and I'd like to get a bike that suits the terrain.

Want to trade bikes?

For tight woods get the WR450 ( do all the free mods listed on this forum)with Applied 22mm offset triple clamps and Rekluse Z-start auto clutch and you will have sweetest off road ride on the market! :applause:

What's your opinion on your KTM525 for a woods bike?

Also how do you like the 450 with the big bore kit? Is it good smooth power?

I own a WR400 and DRZ400S. The DRZ is noticably heavier but it's nice to have the plate if you can't easily dualsport a bike in your area. If you like to ride tight, technical trails the WR will be what you want. The only time I wish I were on the DRZ is when I stall the motor on a hill or something like that. Both great bikes though, either one will get you where you want to go.

KTM525EXC is fine for a woods bike if you want a lot of endless power and dont mind the extra gyroscope. :bonk:

The WR490 has Harley like bottom end power and about the same peak power as a YZ cam in a WR. I highly recommend it when it comes time to rebuild! Maxpower in Wisconsin did mine a year ago. Still running like a top! :applause:

I rode the 490 in Moab this year and it's impressive. :bonk:

The drz is over-weighted and underpowered. You can't compare it to a wr450 or a ktm. If you are coming of a 250 you are looking at a big weight difference. There is roughly a 40-45lbs. between your bike and the drz.

Well, ride the DRZ and then ride the WR450F, you will throw rocks at the DRZ. But in all fairness, the DRZ is a pretty good bike, the WR is just superior! <ducking from the Zook guys> :applause:

I guess the DRZ is out....I guess it's down to the CRF450X and the WR450F. Does the CRF450's eat valves like the CRF250's do?

I assume so, I don't really know.

There aren't any CRF's in my part of the world. All blue with a bit of orange! No one here is game enough to buy one. The closest bike shop is about 1000kms away.

CRF's are supposed to be great! I read a lot of great about them, but have never seen one!

Try a WR 250 in tight woods. If you get the chance.

Hell yeah!

I keep up if not go faster than my mates on YZ450's!

They are so much fun to ride too, maybe even more so than the 450.

YAMAHAS DO NOT eat valves like hondas.

I can go allot faster on the wr250 than any big bore thumper in tight woods.

I find that a stock YZ450 is completely useless in the tight trails we ride.

I can be really aggressive on the 250 and it doesn't beat the crap out of me like my WR400

If you have narrowed it down to the crf or the wr then the wr is the clear choice. Years of reliable service rather than a second year bike with questionable reliability. Don't take this as an insult, bikes this good are better than most of us will ever be and you will probably never be able to touch the limits on either. Like I said go with what has been proven. The WR is an amazing machine, you won't be disappointed. :applause:
