Yamaha has made the 450F engines available through their karting program for several years...Looks like the karting guys are afraid of the thumpers, though. Not very many have tried them !

I don't know about being afraid of them. I would say they are all worried about trying to keep the weight down.

Not true...the only Yamaha motocross engine that has been offered by the OEM for karting use is the YZ85 two-stroke engine.

You are both mistaken. I raced shifter karts for years...The YZ-125 engine, sold with different engine numbers and ignition than a YZ-125 ( which I purchased and ran) , the 450F and some YZ-250 engines WERE available in the past...I checked the Yamaha website today and they only show the YZ-85 and KT-100 engines, however, this is a recent change. :banghead:

I've seen CR500 powered shifter carts. :banghead: You've got to be a little off center to go that fast in something so small! It did do good wheelies though..

The 125 was offered in the past, till demand fell off...but the 450 was never offered as an engine only purchase. Just ask all the guys that had to purchase complete bikes for the motor for their quads. Tdub

Hey just to let you guys know.....I am not really that crazy...well to some I am, but I have a built YZ426 in my kart and it puts a really big smile on my face. I run in the open class where 95% of the competitors run CR500 or KX500, but the 4 strokes are catching on in a hurry. We run on a dirt oval and have a lot of fun out here in southern oregon and northern california. At first people did not want to run 4 strokes because of the weight issue, but in this style of racing, the weight issue is not really that big of a deal we are finding out!! Good, fun and extremely fast racing and my butt has a cage around me and I have a 5 point racing harness to keep me strapped in, plus the old lady likes me racing these much better than motorcross!! Peace....

OK FFRacing79 you get your wish. In the USSC series, we have a number of Honda 450's and Yamaha YFZ's, YZ's, and WR's running. Nobody is afraid of them, but the racing we do puts a ton of stress on them and a lot have grenaded. So far, a stock motor will not be competitive with the best 250 2 stroke singles out there, but built 4 stroke motors have won in the ICE class. I will admit that this year was a real sorting out process and we did not have good results. This will change as we build on the experiences and get a handle on keeping them together.

That was awsome. I think my wife might kick me out if I buy one of those. I actually saw a 100CC cart in a garage last week and ask the guy if he would sell it. I think I want a new toy for sure now.
