2004 vs 2005 wr450 power difference

15 posts in this topic

I am in the market for a 04 or 05 WR450. Yesterday I rode my buddies 04 with all the free mods and my other buddies corked up no mods 05. The 05 felt weaker than my old xr250. I know that the mods will liven it up but with same mods which will have more power. I assume that the higher compression 04 will but this article in Dirt Rider

http://dirtrider.com/tests/offroad/141_0503_wr250_450/

says the 05 has more pep. I really am looking for as much power as I can get without laying out much extra money. What reason does the article have for saying the 05 has more power? I really appriciate the replies.

The 03/04 had the most power. The 05/06 have a milder combustion head design with lower compression. :banghead:

The lower compression of the 05+ resulted in a smoother, more controllable power delivery throughout the throttle range. The 03-04 tended to hit pretty hard right off the throttle. As far as max power, I think the difference is negligible...SC

For the stock 03 WR450 (which I am about to do the free mods and install the JD needle and Zip TY fuel screw this weekend), I didn't think that its power is hard to control at all. But, I'm used to riding a big 610 Husqvarna.

When I get the WR modded up, we'll see if that changes anything--I hope!!!

Less snappy? Yes. Less responsive? Opinions will vary on that one. One of my riding buddies has an '03 and there's a noticeable difference when he wicks the throttle open. He has a harder time keeping the front wheel down, but then again, I have a harder time doing wheelies whenever I want. When we do hill climbs, he does more of the point and shoot technique as his front wheel is not something he can rely on for steering. I can tractor up a bit easier than him. I have to use more clutch to get over large obstacles, while he can pretty much just goose it and lift the front up and over. It depends on what you want I guess :banghead: ...SC

Does smoother more controllable translate to less snappy and responsive?

in a way, yes.

i like the hard hitting snap of my WR. that is why i have a YZ cam in there to make it snap even harder. you just have to hold on a bit tighter and know what your doing if you ride it i very tight technical single track.

HPs would be about the same but the 03-04 seems to rev up faster. and again even faster with a yz cam.

the all wr450s 2003-2006 came restricted in a few ways. the bikes are a joke stock. after mods. all are amazing!

i would not buy a 2005. i would go for a 2004, or a 2006, or the 525exc.

I thought I heard that the 05' had a lower center of gravity, can any one confirm?

I am 6'3" and I love all my WR's but when I ride my buddy's EXC 450 I can't help but wish I had a lower center of gravity on my WR :banghead:

I have an 05 WR450 and love it. It has tons of power and the center of gravity feels pretty low. I am 5"11" 240 pounds. I did take out the throttle stop, AIS system and the exhaust insert. I have about 650 miles on it and the power is getting smoother. My last bike was an XR400 which had a very low power band. It would chug over anything. The WR450 revs so much higher that I do need to clutch it sometimes on the slower stuff. I would say that is the only complaint I have is the low end grunt is not there but I haven't put a pipe on it or jetted it yet.

I did put stiffer springs in it which makes a world of difference. I never rode a 03 or 04 WR but I have ridden a WR426 and the 450 is way better than that.

I do live in California and the 05 is green sticker so that made the difference over the 03 and 04 models.

If you find a good deal on a '05 jump on it. Dealers want to dump them right now. I love mine, but I wish it had that cool new computer the '06 has. Either way you can't go wrong, the bikes are awsome. :banghead:

Weaker than an XR250? :banghead:
