airbox mod consensus?

In looking at thumperfaq, for an 03 WR 450, they say just doing the snorkel removal doesn't do much. They have lots of info on punching holes, cutting the top off the airbox, etc.

Has a consensus developed on what's the best way to go, and also not have a huge risk of crap getting into the airbox from the mods?

Thumperfaq is right removing the snorkel on an 03 and newer is insignificant.

You have to mod out the airbox buy punching out the 1" dia holes in the side and placing in foam filter plugs. The bike can then finally breath like a true racing four stroke! :banghead:

I prefer cutting the back of the airbox. If you go to the YZ450 and CRF450 forums, you'll hear from the supermoto guys about the FFR Airbox Mod. Here is a link to one of the forums:

I believe Indy also runs with the back of his airbox cut open, as shown on ddialogue's website:

I think this mod is superior simply because of the additional openings you introduce into the airbox end up higher up, allowing better protection from water ingress in deep mud/water crossings. With regards to flow, I'm certain that is highly debatable as you can probably get more open area by cutting a number of holes on the side of the airbox, but overall available area is probably not the only factor driving the increase in power due to improved airbox flow/breathing. Beyond that, I'm not sure which is best, but by the high praises this mod (FFR Airbox Mod) seems to get by some of the very active supermoto guys (and some MX guys) on the YZF and CRF forum, I think cutting the back of the airbox is a good option, especially that those guys dyno everything. Obviously, the WR has a different airbox and all, but in any case, I think that still applies to a certain extent.

I'm no expert, but that was my conclusion after searching all the forums to find the best way to open up my airbox.

I originally went with the Barnum's Pro Airbox Kit on my '05, but then removed it in favor of removing the little cut-outs from the right side of the airbox. I then glued some bulk filter foam over the open cut-outs and put the side cover back on. I liked this setup better as the Barnum's kit would allow water, etc. a direct route into the airbox and the cutouts would supply the same size opening but retain the side cover as a type of deflector for foreign matter...SC

You are right the air box mod on the back takes a little more work. I did that over 2 years ago and the airbox has structurally held up and the battery tray is still supported! :banghead::banghead:
