Relocating The XR-650L's Battery?

4 posts in this topic

Has anyone had any luck relocating the XR-650L's battery and black box to another location? A friend of mine wants to do the Baja 1000 on an "L" and I'm going to help him set one up for the race. I was considering relocating the battery to take the stress off of the subframe and centralize the weight, possibly to in front of the lower frame tubes under the head pipes in a specially made skid plate /battery holder. Your thoughts?

There have been a couple of "plastic surgeons" that have reworked the XRL electronics and moved the battery and fuses into the airbox. From the photos I've seen it looks like it worked out well. The major changes needed are removing the airbox boot, using an external pod (K&N) type filter, installing a terminal PCV, and closing off the airbox. :banghead:

I've been considering this mod myself. Just haven't gone over the edge yet. The best part about it is you can put XR600R side panels on an the L (almost) looks like a real dirt bike. :applause:

chopper builder Arlen Ness has used some sort of aircraft sealed gel-cell batteries before, I saw pics of them, they were quite small, and could be mounted in any position ... pricey, but versatile and shockproof, etc.
