Won this street legal wr400f on ebay, Opinions? Advice?

14 posts in this topic

Hello all,

I won this wr400f (street legal) on ebay a few days ago and will be meeting the guy very soon for delivery of the bike. Can anyone out there give me any advice on this bike on anything, What to look for, What to look out for, and etc?

And does anyone have any advice for me for after I get the bike home and start doing some riding? Maintenance intervals? Things to put on the bike?

I'm pretty excited about this thing.. I've been riding street bikes for a long time and have ridden some dirtbikes for a few years in the past. I regularly ride atvs ( I have a yfz450 atv currently).

Any advice is greatly appreciated... I am currently reading through the forums but there is ALOT of info out there.

Thanks,

George

The first thing I would do is get rid of the stock WR tank and seat. Go get a Clarke 3.2 gallon tank and YZ seat. You will like the ergo's much better.

Doesn't the YZ tank hold less gas :banghead:

Do yourself a favor and purchase a shop manual (or find it on line) :applause:

What year yz seats will fit it? I am pretty sure the 98-00's were all the same seats.

And would you mind telling me how it changes the ergos? The YZ seat/tank combo flattens out the seat to give more of a motocross feel. Allows you to get up on the tank going into corners. I did the IMS seat tank on my '99....the original seat and tank were off the bike before I ever rode it. :banghead:

Yes, the YZ tank holds less fuel. However, I wasn't talking about the stock tank. I was talking about a Clarke 3.2 gallon tank. You can then use a stock YZ seat and you will benefit by being able to move around better (more forward on the tank for cornering, etc.) Plus, because of the tank design, the fuel is carried lower, creating a less top heavy feel-which after riding the WR, every little bit helps.

98-02 will bolt right up for tanks and seats. The only thing that's different is the shrouds. You will have to stick to 98-00 if you want them to mount up to the radiators properly.

And I second the shop manual advice.

Nice buy,

I've a 2000 WR 400 , put a baja designs kit on it and dual sported it prior the the CA nazi socialist enviromentalists shutting down the program in '02. This really irritated a CHP officer one day in Lee Vining , CA when, he thought he was making a killing pulling me over. I am keeping the bike so as to jump from trail to trail and ride all the "trails" the same Nazi's have closed to non street legal vehicles.

Best investment on this bike is the pro taper bars and Scotts Steering stabliizer to straigten her out in 5th gear whoops. With Yz Cam timing adjustment, clip the grey wire, cut the throttle stop and a good , quiet exhaust system and the bike is bombproof and plenty fast.

Service intervals depend highly on frequency of rides, river crossings, mudd, sand etc. Service the Swing arm and shock linkage every 3rd or 4th ride, Adjust the valves every 6 or 7 and the motor will last forever.

A real nice plus is the 100 mile range on the stock tank. I sell gas on the trail for 2 beers per ounce to all my honda and KTM buddies to help them get backjk to the gas stops when they all run dry on long singletrack loops.

Great bike, Have fun and RIDE It!

Nice bike... I agree with a YZ seat and a tank, can't hurt to have two tanks. Change the oil often and make sure the valves are correctly into spec. I think street use on these transmissions is risky but that's my own personal opinion.. Have fun...

Dan
