Help '99 wr400

I'm lookin at buying a '99 wr400 from a guy. he has put an acerbis front fender, acerbis head light and acerbis tail light on it along with some others that he didn't list. my question is what is good to know about these bikes. i've talked to dealers about the '05s and '06s and have read articles about '00 and '01 but haven't seen anything specifically for '99's.

Please help

any information is appreciated

Fun bikes depnding on how much ya get her for! But I have the 2000 an LOVE it. I dont think there is much of a change.

I have an 02 426 and love it. I have read many threads by 400 owners and they wouldn't trade them for the world :banghead:

purchased an '02 426 a month ago and it is a freaking beast. absolutely love it even after being off of bikes for 20+years it felt like I never left except for all of the advances in dirt bikes nowadays. go for it and get it, you won't regret it.

I have a 99 with a yz seat and tank. The stock seat and tank sucks.

I also YZ timed my WR,gained lots of top and mid range punch without sacrificing low end.

If you buy it make sure you grease the steering stem and linkage, hopfully the previous owner did too. Also check that the valves are in spec.

Things to check-

Excessive wear on the kick starter and foot pegs.

Wear on the swingarm under the chain guide.

Chain and sprockets

Ask if any free mod's have been done.

Throttle return cable likes to fray.

Check wheel bearings, swing arm pivot bearings and fork seals.

Learn the starting drill.

The 400's have stainless valves which will easily outlast the 426/450's titanium valves. I'd say the 400's are the best four strokes ever made, they are reliable like XR's, and have power like the new 450's. There is no better Thumper than the YZF timed WR400 with a YZf seat and tank in my book. (I have one for sale by the way)

titanium is lighter than SS therefore they can rev free'er and faster, but they wear out quicker, SS will last longer, some people have put SS in there 426 and 450s for realiability

I like my 400 so much that I have my 450 for over a year now and still haven't sold my 400. It does have a plate on it so that makes it harder. but mainly it because it was my first bike when I got back into riding and of all the bikes I have owned in the past (~15) I have never had a more reliable and all around usable bike than my 2000 WR400. There are many things I like better about my 450, but man that 400 is one hell of a bike.

By the way the wife keeps asking me when I am going to sell it, I keep telling her its not a good time to sell a dirt bike right now. Its worked for a year now, wonder how long I can keep it up.

yah i took my uncle along with me when i looked at it last night and it had def. been ridden. there was a lot of wear from boots and kick starts on the side which i don't mind. the rear tire was slightly worn because they guy had been riding it down the road to get to his trails and it wasn't an enduro tire...looked like soft pack...when i compressed the front shocks my uncle though he saw oil leak out which scared me the most. now i've heard if you lucky you can replace the seal and refill them and they'll be ok but it still worries me. he has an acerbis head light and front fender on it and has the tail light but it isn't mounted yet. the front tire was getting bad but it ran good...the only other problem i had was that the guts from the exhaust were gone so it def. wouldn't be forestry approved which i love riding on dunes and on trails. i'm not sure if 2500 is the right price for it...

a shame, i like the looks and feel a lot... any one else got a similar bike for sale near michigan...i got a pickup i'll trade ya...

From your last post I'm guessing that you didn't but the 99 WR yet. The problems that you listed are likely to be consistent with any used 1999 bike. Some of the issues you wrote are easily corrected if you get the bike for a good price.

Tires (FRT & RR) about $100.

Fork Seals about $50 (if you do the work yourself).

There is no muffler packing so it's likely that the baffle/spark arrestor has been removed (very common to improve performance). Replacement Yamaha part with better flow $40.

No credit card jokes please :banghead: .

Plus there are a few mods you can do that will give instant performance increase that don't cost anything.

Just some thoughs to help you in your search.

the guy said he was looking to get about 2500 for it. unfortunately i don't have cash right now we were originally going to arange a trade but he bailed on that idea and wanted cash instead which i understand. i was thinking 2250 was a more comfortable offer for me. he is unsure about the hours and is for sure second owner..possibly third. What do you think.

and where in Michigan are you from?

Titanium is lighter. It's not that hard to figure out why the use titanium. Bikes should never be over-revved anyways, so the titanium has no advantage in my opinion. I'm not trying to "hustle" my bike. It truly hauls ass and only people that have rode it know what I am talking about. It will eat up a stock 450.
