6 speed trans for 2007 wr450f

NO, i don't think the 2007 will not be a 6 speed, but wouldn't that be nice :D

why is it that no liquid cooled 4 stroke enduros from japan are 6 speed??? its driving my fu-king nuts. :D:D:eek:

here is my problem. where i live the terrain is very steep and technical. this requires low gearing {14/52, 14/53, 13/50}. being as our bikes are all plated up here we tend to do road sections in order to connect one section to another if we are covering a large distance. so, riding on the road kinda sucks. 85km cruse and 130km at redline sucks on the highway.

this has been bothering for long enough that i had decided to by a ktm 400/450/525exc. but as the time goes on, i like the 5 valve motor more and the exc motor less. the yami motor revs up fast and strong with almost no vibration at all. the ktm motors tend to rumble and bark a bit.

what should i do?????????

Agreed, however I've run mine quite a long way @ 70 mph / 113 kph without problems. More of an issue for me is tire wear and balance, than blowing up the WR. :D

I'm not worried about the motor failing at all. it could run at top rpm all day. it just sucks !!!! way better to cruse @ 4-5000 not 9000.........

I feel your pain Simon. :D The WR needs a wider gear box or a 6 speed. I am always changing from 13/50, 14/50 & 15/50 depending on where I am riding. 5th gear is too low and a 6th overdrive would be great for dual sport and long fire road runs. 13/50 is prefect for tight steep technical riding and will save your clutch from frying. :D

I wonder if we can get a taller 5th gear with the stock set up? :D

Assuming the gearboxes are almost identical on the 426 vs 450, I'd say the 4th could be longer too. When I commute to work, I ride a 16/44 gearing and still there is no dead spot between the 3rd and the 4th. On the other hand, I have to push the 4th at top rpm (at least 7500 I guess) if I want a neat transition to the 5th otherwise, I can hear the cam chain talk.

The fourth gear could be faster, this would allow for an even faster 5th gear. But at the moment, if a hole exist in the gear box, it's already between the 4th and 5 th. I would say, let's push the 4th first and then put a faster 5th.

At 16/44, the WR feels loaded. It purrs at 70 MPH. I would say 15/44 would be enough. The next front I install on that bike will probably be a 15 with a 44 on the road rear rim and a 48 on the trail rear rim.

who do we talk to, and how many cases of Saki will it take to bribe one of the yami motor japan big wigs . i think they need to step it up and and put a 6 speed bike out or they are going to loose more sales to ktm.

at this point i would pay 1000+$ for a 6speed trans in my wr. or i would walk out an buy a brand new 06/07 if they came as a 6 speed.

i wonder is we got 100 people to write them a letter saying they love the motor but are going to buy a ktm if they would think about it. ............ because i sure think about it allot.

You could get a set of gears made up for a longer 5th. In Australia it is usually about $450AU a set for car boxes so the WR should be roughly the same or less due to it being a straight forward - straight cut gear. In the USA I would expect it to be much cheaper. There are usually specialist gear makers around who do boxes for race and rally cars.

I reckon the WR with 14/50 is as low as I'd ever go. Even on the steepest hills it seems to start off in first without a problem. I have found in the past that going too low in the gearing causes loss of traction on steep loose hills. Have you ever tried to persist with the taller gearing? In the early days I used to go lower in order to make it easier to climb hills but what it actually did is make me climb them at a slower speed and have less momentum to get over the roots, rocks, ruts, vertical faces etc. The best thing I ever did was force myself to ride with the taller gearing and keep the momentum up. It actually makes it easier when you get used to it. Now I ride in 2nd and 3rd where I used to ride in 1st. Same for really slippery up hills, when starting you need to keep the revs right down low so the pulses of the 4 stoke motor increase the traction. I find the most traction happens just before the motor stalls so the trick is to keep it in that "sweet spot" until you have enough momentum without stalling.

i understand what you are talking about and i have ridden lots with the 14/50. but i don't think you understand how tight, nasty, and steep the stuff we ride is. 1st is for crawling and maneuvering. 2nd is for ripping in the single track.

as for getting a set of gears cut, i have thought of that allot. i even know a guy who could do it for "cheap" but by the time you pay for that and the gaskets and actually ripping it apart to do it............you might as well just got by an exc.........

we need yami to step up!!!!!

Even if you could machine custom gears you may not have case clearance for a taller ratio. :D

Simon is right about 13/50 gearing in nasty 45 degree climbs with turns and logs to dodge and maneuver around the taller gearing just abuses the clutch. Do that on a 1000 foot plus climb and your clutch will be toast! Remember that most of us are using 120 to 140 rear tires that are taller than stock and make the gearing a little taller anyway. :D

Well I have always been happy with the torque to pull out of anything. Like come to a section where 2nd gear is best, but your in third, and comin fast and just arent prepped for a downshift. Goose it and torque your way through that baby. But Simon your right, another gear is not a bad thing

For off-roading I think the 5 speed is just right.. Yamaha has had problems with 5th gears, it seems like they're just now figuring it out and I can't see them going to a 6 speed. As much as I like my bike I don't think it makes a great road bike, their are plenty of other bikes that do better on the street but for off road conditions the 5 speed is perfect for me. :D

my bike is primarily an off road bike. but sometimes to get there or back there is a short {30km-} road sectoin...............

things are allot different here in BC then they are down in cali..........if you lived up here and went riding with us you would know what i mean.

The WR would be untouchable with that wish list. I hate revving the piss out of mine on the road sections. The bike can handle it, but I just hate ringin' her out like that for any length of time. My WR does great on the road, big ass knobbies and all......she just hums a little tune while going 80. :D

My WR motor has way more grunt and better power delivery with the 5 valve head. The 525 top end is stronger but the mid and bottom is no match for the Yamaha. I agree with your observations.

Funny, I feel than the 525 pulls harder right off the bottom than the WR but what makes the WR so nice is the fact that it's always building power on the upper revs.. From a gearbox point of view, the KTM feels more linear through the gears and the WR is more gappy.

Yeah but you guys don't forget the Yam Indy rides is in fact a 490 right? :D

True that it is a bore difference with the 450, not a stroke difference, but I'm sure it boosts the engine at low and mid rev anyway. Heck! That is 40cc! :D Almost 10% bonus :eek: And I'm sure it is jetted alright :D

well since your all talking about gearing set ups, what is the current sproket numbers for the wr400. I ride in rather open woods were im usully 3rd or 4th. Id like the bike to be like a gear faster but still climb. Kinda like our xr400. about that fast as long as it maintains its climbing ability
