Cut the cord

WHICH wire is supposed to be cut on the wr450? Even dealers give me different answers! Pink,Grey. Which is it!!!!! Where is it!!!!! Is it suppose to disconnect somehow or do I cut it? I've done the airbox, throttle stop and un-corked the exhaust. Does cutting the wire make a big difference?

if its an 05 = grey wire..search the forums, there millions of thread on here in regards to the grey wire mod.

remove the tank and its on the right side of the frame. you will see a group of wires and the gray one will be right in front of yo face. i have zero patenice so i just cut mine but you can remove it from the connector by taking a small screwdriver and removing the little gasket from down inside the connector.

it was the easist mod for me.

i want to do this to my WR450 05 but will it damage my engine? i don't want it to stuff up by doing this. has anyone had any problems. is the different timing going to cause any issues or cause valves need more frequent checking? can you do something to alternate between the two maps via a switch? :D

use the "search"

Put a switch in line to turn on an off. From what I understand the yz is not grounded an the WR is grounded. That is what changes the CDI mapping. Seems like you could put in line a simple on /off switch. Maybe like your headlight switch. Then you tell If the Mod changes any thing! I have yet to do it!

If you look throuhg the other topics that have discussed this there have been people who have put in switches. Dont know wha effect the mod has as I havent done it to mine.......yet....

I have an 05 450 and just cut my wire last week. It seems to help with some of the low end bog I was getting. I don't know if this mod actually changed the throttle response (bogging), but it seems that way to me. The local yamaha mechanic rides a wr and said to cut the wire... take that for what it's worth.

from the 250F FAQ (99% of which applies to the 426/450F's) sitemap,

see

and also

as you can see from that last link, there is a definite change to he midrange iginition map with the grey wire disconnected. moreover, from testing we discovered that the grey wire is ONLY interrogated when the bike is started; therefore, putting a switch in the circuit is of little value if you expect to be able to toggle between ignition maps while riding. you have to stop the engine, and restart it in order to change to the other ignition map.

the problem is your accelerator pump (AP). see

I did the switch on my old WR426 and didnt feel a bit of difference. My new 450 is a Canadian and in 04, they didnt have the grey wires, so mine is "YZ"'d in that area I guess.

The CDI only "reads" the wire at startup, so to use a switch, you'd have to shut off the ignition, flip the switch, then restart again.

Waaaay too much of a pain to go from "running good" to "runs like crap" :D

Oh... the "pink" wire mod is for the CRF.

Cut them all just to be sure you get the right one.

Just about everyone with a WR does this mod? No, it doesn't mess up anything. Just do it and move on!! If for some reason you don't like it connect it back up. It's really no big deal. :D

I have an 05, the grey wire is in the group of 6 wires under the tank - right hand side (can't miss them). I unplugged it, poked a very small screw driver in the small hole under the connector, this releases the locating barb and pulled the wire and connector out. Make sure you plug the hole up so water doesn't enter the plug. It made the bike idle heaps better, I think it runs better mid range and up high but it's hard to tell as each time I ride I change stuff and it goes better and better. Seems to have changed the induction sound in the high revs to a deeper cammy sound (could be my immagination).
