I like my "L" lean - anyone else?

Here's why:

52718.2|306.5|5.379gal.@$2.459/87oct. 56.98mpg (XR650L) Rock&McCarren 7:40am

Translation:

Odometer (with thousands of miles missing due to broken speedo cables): 52718.2

Miles on trip meter since last fill-up: 306.5

Gallons taken: 5.379gal

Miles/gallon = 56.98mpg

Yep: 87 octane

This includes a 'shortcut' that adds 5 miles of gnarly, fun, steep, rocky offroad to my commute, and about 3 miles of freeway that my regular route doesn't get near. This bike spends some time at WFO or ar highway speeds. Gas mileage has almost never dipped below 50mpg.

Yes, I'm one of those AR people that keeps a fuel/maintenance log on all of my vehicles.

I have a POS Acrebis 6.0 gas tank. at 56.98mpg * 6 gallons = 341miles range. It has gotten over 65mpg before keeping it under 50mph.

I figure that if I want the raw kind of power that pulls my arms off, breaks traction on asphalt through 3rd gear, 0-60 in 2.9 seconds, I'll ride my modified ATK605.

So besides the smog removal, the foam air filter and the snorkel removal, my 650L is going to remain 'stock'.

That' bang on to what I used to get on my NX650.

I thought that if you removed the snorkel in the air box that you had to rejet - making it non stock.... I am removing my smog junk this weekend - and other than that my only engine mod is a UNI air filter

If you remove the snorkel and put in a foam filter, it will run leaner. Its almost in the danger-zone stock, so give us a long-term report at 5,000 miles.

XR650L_Dave,

52718.2 miles and running VERY strong.. Add 33 to that mileage from today's commute in 90 degree weather.

Never rejetted. It was tuned from the factory. Just lucky??? Given that Honda has engineered the valves to run hot and lean, without lead; I don't think I'm lucky at all.

New head at 18,000 back in 1999.. A few races, sand mountain, hillclimbes against 500's - showing off, way overheated.. No engine work since. Richard Thorwaldson welded my broken frame in two places in 2003.

I'll give you a report in another 5,000 hard miles and it'll be the same. Mark my word!!

:)

I can average over 50 miles to the gallon with my L re-jetted, snorkel removed, smog removed, K&N filter, and old school Cobra exhaust. That is with stock gearing and WFO alot. :) I was surprised that the re-jet did not adversely affect the gas mileage that bad.

This weekend I removed the smog equipment. Only other mods are Uni foam filter - the snorkel in the air box is NOT removed. Runs great! only 700 miles on it...
