Lower end job on 2000 yz426. A few basic Q's.....

Dont worry as I'm not going to ask what special tools I need. What I would like to know is about the bearings and tranny.

-Besides the crank bearings what others should I consider replacing?

-Buy OEM or is there a better alternative?

-My bike has always shifted positively and never jumped gear, but should I consider doing any preventative maintenence in the trans?

-Anything I should really consider replacing that I'm missing?

I'd like to have all needed parts prior to starting this job, is there anything besides bearings and seals (inc. waterpump seal) that I'll need? I did search and have been reading posts for the last few hours, but cannot get specific answers to these questions.

**Edit: how about the many circlips and o-rings the manual reccomds replacing? Is there a real need to replace these if they are in good shape?

1-Check them all over, and replace the ones that show signs of needing it. I'd say you should plan to replace the four main trans bearings, since they require case splitting to get them out.

2-You can do better than OEM, but it's probably not necessary, and it could be a hassle and cost a lot. Find a bearing wholesaler in your area and see what he has in the sizes you need. You would want to know the ABEC number of what you have now (ABEC 3 would be my guess). Higher numbers indicate tighter mfg tolerances, but to repeat, they're so tight on the OEM bearings there's probably no point.

3-Look your shift forks over. They should show wear only at the points of the 'C' shaped part where they contact the gear. Wear at the center of the 'C', especially only on one side indicates a problem with fork wear or alignment. Check the trans gears for undue rounding of the locking dogs that engage the gears. This will lead to it jumping out of gear later on.

4-The standard mechanic's service manual correct practice way of doing things is that you always throw away every snap-ring and replace it. The truth in practice is different. Never reuse piston circlips (I swear, I never have :D ). Other than that check them carefully, consider the job they're doing, and use your own judgement. I have seen them fail.

Honestly, I've never had a problem with the key and the crank assembly was cheaper! Since I'm doing the top end as well it came down to$$$$$$$$.
